hi ! can any one give me info how i can breed my irish blue staff 3 years old, reg papers and pic"s of ancestors lovley dog. thanks martin
Hi Guest,
You didn't say whether your dog is a bitch or a male dog. I assume that it is a bitch, if that is the case you have a few choices, you could contact the club your dog is registered with either the ISBC, or the SIBTC, and ask if they know of any good stud dogs. You could search sites such as admart or findit, there are always stud dogs on there. Or you could send me a private message and i will give the website address of the stud dog we used who is based in the wirral. Once you have found a suitable stud dog buy a good book on dog breeding such as "the book of the bitch".
All the best,
jo.
I would never suggest looking in the free-ads for a stud dog there is so much crap around these days any dog up for stud just because he happens to be "rare" blue or athletic in conformation or from such and such a line.
Imo if you don't know how to go about breeding the dog and have to ask in the first place you should think twice about breeding it. This is not criticism in any form, it's just from where I stand there are far too many dogs around today being bred for the wrong reasons and then sold to people who dont know any better for lots of £££££ because they believe they are getting something special. First you have to ask yourself what are your reasons for breeding? Are you breeding to better the breed, what difference could these pups make to the future genepool? Are you prepared with all that comes with breeding? The expense and time involved? The fact that you may not be able to home all pups immediatley, that you may have to take a pup back at any time and that you will need to be there to dish out advice for owners all the time and that your responsibilities as a breeder do not end when the pup leaves the house? One of the main questions is why are you breeding? All relevant points. My main advice would be to do as much research before breeding. Choosing a stud dog is not the easiest of tasks you have too look at physical appearance to an extent but also the dog itself, the structure of the dog make sure that any faults your bitch has the stud dog does not that way he will compliment the bitch and hopefully the pups have less chance of having these faults. Dont be tempted just to pick a dog because of his colouring etc.
Start doing a bit more research into the current dogs around today to make sure you can pick the best dog around or available to you and not just the first dog offered. Breed clubs will be able to help to an extent but also getting out there to lots of the alternative shows and seeing the dogs that are on offer, asking fellow owners for their advice and getting a feel for the type of dog you prefer. Once you have done all this you should be in a position where you do not need to ask about how to go about breeding your dog.
Good luck with whatever you decide lets just hope you make the right decision for the breed.
Jo can I just ask what is the ISBC? I have heard of the SIBTC and the ICKC but never the ISBC?
