..my boyfriend has just got home to find our dobe fast asleep on her back with her legs in the air snoring and he had to shout her three times before she woke up!! :-) And I thought they were supposed to be excellent guard dogs!! ;-)

Not a chance strangers come to the house and Abby thinks they are there to play.

I know I've mentioned this before, but the only dog which ever bit me during my Health Visiting career was a Yorkie!!!

She normally makes a racket, heckles up before she know's who it is. She's got the most frightening low, gutteral growl if she's not sure who it is. If it's someone she knows then it's a full on body wiggle to let them know she's pleased to see them!!
Edited because I can't spell.....
ive always been a great believer in the visual deterrent more than anything though - seems to work well with Kara.
She is by far the softest thing i have ever met and the only way she would ever hurt you is if you were allergic to licks lol
but she has on occasion stopped 'dodgy' looking lads from having a good nose in my garden.

She does look frightening when she's 'guarding' and I think you're right that the sight of them would put people off (obviously, not how she was guarding this morning;-))
maybe that was meant to be "go on - rub my belly..... I DARE YA" lol

Lol Gaby!! Sounds just like Jess !!
My parents once came back into the house at 4am. In the house a great dane, spaniel, mongrel and a yorkie and not one single noise. All the same if they had been burglars :)
My friend doggy sat my dogs while I was in Belfast. She had never met them before I told them if she got any trouble squirt them with a water spray. What did they do run up barking she shook the spray and they shot to the four corners of the house. Absolutely useless
You want to hope you dont get any water carrying burglars Thomas lol :))

We allways used to say our staff would lick a burgular to death - untill we had an atempted break in :-(
3.am dog hears noise downstairs - growling wakes us up. She runs down stairs (big scuffle, groweling etc) cat comes running upstairs.
We put it down to the cat knocking somthing over - panic over.
6am get up to let dog out for a wee - blood on the floor by the back door. After checking cat for bites! we phoned the police who took prints etc - but he was never caught :-(
Dont think he will be back though!
She still lets anyone in the house - she just 'knew' he was not ment to be there.
I still find it hard to beleve as she loves everybody.

We had a car broken into once while at a ringcraft class. Dog was in the boot. Dad had left phone on show. Window smashed, glass everywhere, phone gone, showbag gone, money gone, dog asleep. I'm sure if it was possible he would have opend the door for them and given them the stuff!!!!!
Oh and the amount of times I walk into the house and no-one stirs...
I dread to think about the clean up job if anyone got into my house. I'd hate to think that they ever hurt anyone but they really could make a mess of someone if it came down to it. Its one of the reasons i only have the two in the house at night, one in the bedroom and one in the kitchen in a crate but the door open.
