Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / My 12wk old Border Collie's eating habit

We have been feeding our border collie puppy the same food as her breeder did, but recently she hasn't eating very much of it each day which is beginning to worry me, as I think i've made the mistake of introducing her to chicken and fish so now she won't have anything but!  When i'm preparing chicken or fish or canned tuna for my husband and I, her little nose goes crazy and she loves it.  I've given her leftovers of chicken breast and white fish and tried to mix it in with her dry puppy food, but she'll eat around the puppy food and just eat the meat!  I'm not sure what to do.  Do I continue feeding her chicken and fish, and if so, does it have to be cooked or can it be raw?  The danger of doing this is she won't eat her puppy food which supposedly has all the right nutrients that a puppies need.  Also can she eat canned tuna as she loves the smell of it?

Hi Sophie
canned tuna is fine (but the one in oil is better than the one in brine as it will help the coat) :)

You can feed chicken and fish either raw or cooked but cooking can sometimes lose some of the nutrients. Also cooked bones are not recommended as they can splinter.
You can change to a raw diet but if shes still a pup I would do it gradually and not change overnight.
Some people will swear by raw/barf and some prefer complete/tinned etc. its entirely up to you and your pup- both are beneficial in their own way.
I have changed to raw myself and my dogs look well on it. There are plenty of posts on raw/natural/barf diets if you do a search at the top of the board
Good luck- whichever you decide to feed :)

Thank you for your suggestions, I will give her canned tuna in oil tonight, she will think she's in heaven!  Also I think perhaps where I've been going wrong is by not being strict with meal times: I've been giving her a meal first thing in the morning but she's too excited to eat and so I'll leave it down all day and even at night because I think she will get hungrey due to not eating all day.  So basically there has been no routine to her eating times, perhaps this has encouraged her not to eat properly?

border collies can be terrible eaters. try cuting her back to three meals (i take it you are still on four?). its quite normal for BCs (tell me about it....got grey hairs to prove it too!)

I will try cutting her back to three meals and being strict with her eating timetable.  I did to begin with feed her 4 times a day but then when she became lazy with her eating, I have been leaving the bowl down all day and even nights incase she feels hungrey.

Hi at 12 weeks old she may also have sore gums which will mean she isnt so happy eating her dry food you could try soaking it to soften it for her.

gosh it's so nice to speak to experienced collie owners!  I gave her some tinned tuna in oil today with her biscuits and she ate the whole lot as the biscuits were covered in tuna tasting oil! Thank you for your suggestion, I will soak her dry biscuits from now on in water and then coat them  in tasty meat juice!

Hi Massinga,
I would steer clear of tuna, due to this paricular fish's high mercury content :( If she like tuna than she will probaly like salmon, sardines in oil or tomato sauce etc.

Thank you Rose, I will take your adviec and not feed Massinga tuna from now on and try her on sardines in oil!
