It depends entirely what you agree to with the stud dog owner, I would strongly recommend you sort it out before the mating and commit it to a contract which you both sign.

There is an example of a stud contract. Note the *live birth* as that is your protection should no puppies result from the mating. Hope that helps.

Some stud dog owners will not require a stud fee if the bitch misses, or will offer stud on next season, no extra cost if money already paid out.

However a contract stating this is a very good idea.  That way no-one can go back on their word (not that they would, of course because you trust eachother!) cough cough
