Hi Heidi
As you say clumber spaniels are prone to hip dysplacia and have to be treated very delicately as puppies. What level of flat do you live on? A puppy would have to be carried up and down the stairs for at least six months and they get heavy very quickly. You could be looking at lugging 15-20kilos of dog up and down stairs.
They also shed hair constantly so they are not for the houseproud. Everything you own and wear becomes covered in fine white hair - my chiropractor remarked on Monday that my socks were covered in hair.
As with all puppies they chew and can do a lot of damage when young. As they are sociable dogs they're not that happy at being left alone, but I'm sure one could cope for a couple of hours a day.
Try phoning Mrs Kirkman at the Clumber Spaniel Club 01204 709631, she may well have a factsheet she could send you, plus she will be able to tell you all about the breed. Puppies are very hard to find and prices now start in excess of £600.
