Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Malted Kelp Tablets
- By WendyWoo [gb] Date 27.02.05 17:05 UTC
I have a dog who is a poor eater I have been trying to give him the dorwest malted kelp tablets but he wont touch anything that has them in, on etc, does anyone have any advice on how I could give him these tablets other them forcing them down his throat (which I do not want to do), defeats the object of trying to stimulate his appetite if can not even get the tablets down him!!!!

Thanks

maby you could crush them and put them in a liver paste?
You can et tablet crushers fromt he chemist and liver paste is made by blending a few chicken livers. You dont need much just enough to mask the taste. maby some other treat with the same method may work?

Alternatively i used to give an elderly dog her pills in a tiny bit or mars bar, i spimply poped it into the caramel. I know chocolate is not good for dogs but needs much lol.

or wrap the tablet in a piece of meat that usually works.

When i've used malted kelp tablets i've always just popped them down my dogs throat,i coat it in a little butter and it slides right down. The point of giving them is to stimulate the appetite so they WILL eat,if they have no appetite then they wont eat, hence mixing them in with the food is sorta counterproductive, which is why you have to give them 20-30 minutes before you serve their meal,to give them time to stimulate their appetite :) Does this make any sense at all??? :p

I've just spoken to a rep from dorwest because your post reminded me to order some more and i told her about your concerns, and she said it makes no difference wether you mix them in with the food or pop them down the throat, the dog will still get the same effects.

Mine get Kelp powder as they have an aversion to tablets and dont notice a little powder!

I used Enervite paste (From Pets at Home) to try stimulate my dog's appetite & it worked to some degree.   To be truthful, they will eat when they want to eat.  I used to pull my hair out with Curtis as a puppy as he was such a poor eater.  Now 2 years on and nothing touches the sides!

Wendywoo can you let us know how you get on with the tablets and if they work for your dog? :)

I am really interested in your train of thought of not popping them down the throat and wanting to give them with meals. Can you explain this a little more indepth?

Malted kelp tabs work for some dogs and not others,i'm curious to know how the dogs have been dosed  who they HAVE worked for,eg. down the throat before meals or mixed into their food,or any other ingenious ways :D
And if they didnt work how did you give them.

Hi rose

I do not want to force them down his throat as I do not want taking tablets to become an issue just in case he needs to take tablets in the future etc.  I have decided not to go with the malted kelp tablets and instead I am giving him Enevite - he will lick this off the spoon therefore I feel in has some control and it does not become a battle.  Not sure if it is working though as he is being quite fussy at the moment, however I think that he is very hormonal (bonking everything in sight at the moment) I was told by someone that this can really unset their eating - not sure how true this is.
