Topic Dog Boards / General / best way to introduce pup

after tragically losing Indie, we have decided to get a pup (the house is unbearably quiet )

Milo is coming home in a couple of weeks, and i wanted your opinions on the best way to introduce him to Jazz.
My own ideas are to have him in the small crate when we bring him in and let jazzy have a good sniff, then after a little while, let Milo out (supervised of course!) and let them meet each other.
I have no intentions of letting them be together unattended until i know all is well, and they will be sleeping seperately until the time comes (if it does) that they choose to sleep together.

Just wanted to know of anyone had any advice to give, as Indie was obviously Jazz's daughter, we didnt have to go through this.

there are many different ways to introuce a puppy to a older dog you can of course take the puppy outside the hourse on a lead then bring out your other dog on a lead to and let them sniff each other etc then when all is well bring the two into the house.
or you could let the elder dog snif the puppy while its in your arms then let him down and see what happens.
its not a good idea to just leave the two dogs alone on their first meet and hope they get along as thats not always the case it should always be superised and they will learn to accept each other

Hi Kerrie,

I always introduce mine outside the house too - think it's easiest and safest way all round.  The existing dog is not on it's own territory (not necessarily an issue anyway ;) ) and the puppy isn't going to feel too overwhelmed by enclosed and unfamiliar surroundings as well as an unknown dog/s.

Regards, Teri :)

Hi Em
we introduced ours inside-
I held Libby and let Gus have a good sniff of her. He was very interested . After a while they were playing together -although at first Jazzi might be a little possesive with her toys etc. which is something to watch for- and feed seperately too :)
