Hi Wendywoo,
Cockers are not my breed but I've certainly been put through my paces over the years with BSDs who are notoriously faddy eaters ;) I've usually found with youngsters that it's best not to give in to them if possible (of course there's always the exception  determined to be an anorexic!) Can you try adding a little of something like sardines (drained) or green tripe to his complete food instead of chicken & rice? Usually the smellier the better.... also either would help add weight more so than chicken
I know some people who have had success with kelp tablets but haven't tried them myself. As to having a fast day, personally I would not do that with a youngster - although it may be someone will be able to give you a positive feedback on that. IME fussy eaters don't really care if you starve them or increase their exercise to "work up an appetite" - I've not known either course of action to work in my own breed :(
I think Dorwest Herbs (from memory) do something other than Kelp for poor appetite - might be worth a visit to their website http://www.dorwest.co.uk
HTH, Teri :)
