Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Puppy Training... is this correct way??
- By Guest [gb] Date 25.02.05 10:27 UTC
Hi All,

I have just rang a dog trainer (recommended by a very good friend with a puppy!) to enroll my pup.

She said she needs to come round my house first to see how we are with the pup, and how we do things with her. Then she can train us to get things right, and see us in our home environment.

Then after that we can bring our pup to the classes. (its clicker training.)

She is charging us £25 to come round to the house, and £6 to enroll our pup, and then its £3 per session.

Is this right? Has anyone else had the trainer come around the house?

She is a boxer puppy, and as soon as I said boxer thats when she suggested to come round the house??

Many thanks....

It depends on the trainer, but I know of some  who prefer to get to know owners on a more one to one basis as it really helps them assess pups, owners and also give good advice on puppy mouthing, socialisation,  etc. Many owners have real concerns and really like the trainer coming for a one to one first. Boxers can be very boisterous with other pups and it's crucial for them and the others that nothing goes wrong at this very early stage. I personally would think your trainer is a very good one :)

Hi Guest, I go to 3 different training classes with different dogs, all Labradors.  When I 1st enrolled Tia with a training class, the trainer suggested she came out to the house 1st. When she arrived, she was able to see Tia (then a puppy) in her 'safe' environment and how she reacted and behaved. The trainer also got down onto the floor and played and bonded with Tia. When we went to the class, Tia recognised the trainers voice (gorgeous german accent) and Tia settled into the class immediately.  Coming to the house also helped the trainer to spot any misgivings Tia may have had outside her 'safe' environment, since she had seen both and did not have a one sided view of her. I have had 3 other pups at training classes since Tia (now a year old) and have to admit that I did like the home visit.

Edited to add,  the prices seem about right, My trainer charged £20 for home consultation, the rest I would imagine would be to cover her cost, rental of hall etc, but it doesnt sound too steep, about average I would think.
