Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what age do male dogs start cocking their leg? Ive got a male rottweiler who's 7 months and ust wonered when his balls were going to drop?

Leg cocking varies, and 7 months is still very young, so I wouldn't worry about that, and in any case even if he never did cock his leg it isn't important. His testicles though should normally have dropped by now, it may be that they are moving in and out of the scrotum at the moment. Some dogs do though, have problems with retained testicles, but I'd give it until he was over a year old before worrying about it.

Vets usually like to remove retained testicles to prevent the risk of cancer later, but it's too early to say at the moment.

My oldest is 5.5 years old and rarely cocks his leg.  Many  male dogs won't if they have a wide open space in which to urinate.  It's very normal for a male dog to never cock his leg.

My four also very rarely cock their leg-I see it as a good thing!

Mine cocked his leg at 7 months I was out with him in the fields near me, and he just did it there and them, oooo, a proud Mum I was!!!

I don't want that time to come, i think Tyler looks so sweet squating, cocking his leg just won't be the same.

Our very large German Shepherd hardly ever cocked his leg and always sat down for a wee when he was out and in the garden too.  I used to think it was because he was quite large and it was harder for him to stand on three legs than a small dog.  Our small dog started cocking his leg at about 6 months of age.

My lab is 10 months old and he takes notions when cocking his leg. Sometimes he will, sometimes he won't!!

But i fully understand what hairydog is saying, he cocked up against a lamp post the other morning on our early walk, i was so proud i woke my wife up to tell her about it, she wasn't really as excited as i was....
