Yes, I sympathise.
I used to get it a lot and ended up doing an exclusion diet from a self help IBS book - basically you cut out anything that may cause a problem for about 3 weeks. I cut out caffeine, yeast, etc...and discovered a big problem was in actual fact the caffeine, although from a diary etc, you would never have known.
I still get an upset stomach at times, because i suspect i am now "sensitised", but nothing like i used to. I can now also drink coffee as an occasional treat.
Did it just disappear before, or did you do something to stop it?

I've had it for about 20 years on and off :( I didn't realise what it was until fairly recently. I try to restrict my coffee which helps. I take natural yoghurt which I think helps and try to avoid eating a big meal if I have to go out soon afterwards ;)
Do you find that drinking de-caffeinated coffee is OK ?

I don't drink coffee and mainly drink water, lots of it !
It went to a great degree as had about a good two years on and off. I didn't do anything to help stop it
The only thing I can think of is that I am under quite a lot of stress at work and having the flood at home hasn't helped matters ! I think I need to maybe address that side before I can get back to normal or as normal as it is ! :)
I think I need to step up the fibre in my diet as they say that always helps !

My doctor prescribed me peppermint oil to take before each meal- although now I just take it if I am eating out or eating a havy meal-it really does help!

I am sure stress does affect it; that's one of the times i get it coming back :(
Daisy, interestingly de caffeinated coffee had the same effect, as did lots of chocolate (sob!).

Mmmm - I'll just have to cut out the coffee altogether then :( Stress is most definitely a factor - even having to rush out to training classes after dinner can cause numerous trips to the loo :(

Lucy, I suffered terribly from it, it dictated my whole life for a few years. I started using a herbal treatment called Tormentil Complex and it has been a Godsend, you can get it at Holland and Barret and it is made by Bioforce. Do a search for it on google if you want to read up about it. It has worked so well for me, pretty much gave me my life back :D.
Good Luck

I meant to add it was recommended to me by the Jan de Vries herbalist clinic (he's the guy that is on all the health TV shows). If you want I can pm you the clinics phone number and you can call them for some advice, you can also buy the stuff direct from them. The clinic have been a great help finding a treatment for my excema.

I believe colonic irrigation is meant to be really good for people who suffer from IBS among other things. I didn't have IBS, but it did sort out my problems.

I suffer from IBS from time to time and it is normally stress that brings it on. About 5 years ago it was really bad... suffered from terrible stomach upsets and bloatedness, I went to the doctors and thats when they diagnosed it (after many tests and a horrible endoscopy to rule out anything else! Yuk!) this was all around the time I split up from my longterm BF, changed jobs had no where to live etc!!! After trying loads of different things I found "colpermin" really helped, you can buy it over the counter.
