we lost our puppy on thursday under general anesthetic and as you can imagine we are devastated, we are taking her for a private cremation this afternoon, and my husband has gone to collect her now. The advice i am needing is for her mother (who we also own) as she is pinning badly for her, i am asking if you think it would be ok to let her see her when she comes home so she 'knows', i really dont know what to do for the best, us and the kids are having a hard enough time excepting this, i cant imagine how she is feeling, please tell me what i should do.

Mumford, I'm so sorry you have lost your puppy, you must all be devastated. I've no experience of letting a companion animal see it's departed friend, but I have heard a lot of anecdotal stories about it being a good thing, to the point that we have decided when the terrible time comes and we lose one of ours that we will do our utmost to let the survivors "say goodbye" to their friend. I don't know if this helps you, but it's what we would do.
Thinking of you,
Lesley

I'm so sorry, what a tragic thing to happen. There's lots of anecdotal evidence that it's a good thing to let other dogs see and sniff their dead friend, so as you have the opportunity I'd do it. You must all be feeling terrible. :(

I'm so sorry that you have lost your puppy - how old was it? I have had mother cats who have searched for a dead kitten for a day or so - they do seem to know how many kittens they have.
Our beloved Purdey was put to sleep here at home. Immediately afterwards, we brought all the others in to see her, and sniff her, so that they knew that she had gone. She is buried down beside our kennel run, and although the ground is still bare there, none of them have tried to dig in it - although they do dig everywhere else that they get the chance.

Hi Ems
I would let her mum say goodbye.....without seeing the body she won't know where she has gone.
My thoughts are with you
Nikki
Sorry to hear about your puppy. Thinking of you all.
