if you feed the barf diet what meats are used? and which is the best complete meal to add?
Any meat really, apart from pork, although some do feed it. It is thought to be indigestible for dogs. And the whole idea of barf is that you don't feed any complete meal, you make it complete over time, i.e. a week, by combining different foods.

I have used pork before, but it tends to 'bung' Gonzo up. Then when he does 'eventually' go, he has diareah(sp?).

I feed pork,mainly ribs,never had a problem,altho my dogs have cast iron stomachs :D
The whole point of feeding a barf diet is to do away with commercial, processed foods, unless your dog doesnt get enough variety or is fussy and wont eat different stuff
I feed a small amount of eaglepack holistic dry food, this is a complete food, not a mixer, you can check it out at www.postalpets.co.uk.
It is not advised to mix kibble with raw,it can create tummy upsets as they digest at different rates. If your set on feeding a commercial food aswell as raw, make sure and feed them far apart, for example, kibble for breakie and raw for tea.
Good luck and dont forget to read plenty of books and ask as many questions as you can on here :)

I forgot to answer your question,DUH!!
Feed as many different meats as you can get your hands on :D As well as it's offal. There are no meats you can not feed. The more variety in their diet the better!

Hi Frank
I feed raw....any meat I can get my hands on although I do tend to avoid turkey since it can cause bad wind.I also feed eggs, veges and fish.
The idea of feeding raw is to stop feeding 'processed' foods such as complete of tinned.

thanks everyone for your help, just one more question how much meat would you feed a westie, in it's morning and night feed?

As a rough guide as an adult you would feed 3% of the dogs weight per day.If for eg your dog weighed 15 lb you would feed approx 1/2 lb.If you feed 2 x a day feed 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night.Start doing this and then adjust according to how your dog does on it...ie feed more if the dog looks to lose weight and vice versa

Years ago, in the days when people fed meat and biscuits, the rule of thumb for my breed was (for an adult) half an ounce of mixed meat and biscuit per pound of bodyweight. (That works out pretty much the same as your reckoning, Archer!) For a growing pup you'd feed three-quarters of an ounce per pound bodyweight.

Hi Frank. The way I look at it is that a wild dog would pick at pretty much anything it could get its grubby little paws on :D Imagine, chickens, ducks, rabbits to name but a few - how many dog's, jackals, wolves etc would pass up a hunt of any of these species? I feed all sorts of species including chicken, turkey, pork, lamb, beef, vennison, duck, rabbit, fish (trout, salmon, pilchards etc)

PS My girl loves pork ;) especially ribs!

Pork is fine... in fact is is the closest meat to Caribu which I know is what Malamutes evolved on :D

Surely caribou-meat is closer to venison? After all, caribou are a species of deer.
:)
Well the only meat I can feed is chicken, everything else gives them the s**ts. Even lamb. I can feed small amounts of lamb offal. And believe me, I have tried. It's not worth the mess! I have been told by the Burns people not to feed pork, which is why there are no pork flavour dog foods around. If you get away with it with your dogs, fine. But just because it doesn't make them loose, doesn't mean it's good for them. It doesn't get away from hte fact that it is not easy for them to digest. Incidently, that goes for humans too! Raw meaty bones are raw meaty bones at the end of the day, and 3 chicken wings twice a week has suited my dogs well. They have tripe 4 times a week, offal once and oily fish once. Plus fruit and veg and rice and bio yogurt between 4 and 1 times a week. Eggs upset them too, but they do have crushed shells if we have them. My latest dog seems to be a bit tougher so I may start to experiment with him.
My dogs get pork & it suits them fine :)

It`s a good source of protein, vitamins & minerals, why wouldn`t they be able to digest it? Dogs digestion is not like ours.

Thats what I've read :)

Can you remember where? It's got me very curious and I'd like to check it out.
Edit: According to
this it is indeed very like venison.
:)

I've racked my brain and it was someone on the Malamute forum that told me... they call her the BARF Queen and she knows her stuff :D
Shall I ask her where she got it from?

Please, yes!
:)
Found a site with pretty good all round info on different foods. :) Not what your looking for tho J/G
