Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / exercise & bloat in bullmastiff
- By maysea [gb] Date 08.02.05 13:29 UTC
im quite confussed as i dont exercise my bullmastiff pup before or after meals because of causing bloat but am worried as she exercises herself she is 14wks and very lively.

Bullmastiffs aren't prone to bloat as puppies and it is normal practice to let her exercise herself in garden. AS she gets older don't exercise her straight after a meal leave her about an hour before taking her for a walk. Also when she is adult feed 2 slightly smaller meals morning and evening rather than one large meal once a day.

hi,
I agree with paxo, although i must admit i dont excersise my dogs until at least 2 hrs after food.
I dont put my bullmastiffs on any kind of excersise(other than running round the house and garden) until they are about 5/6 months old,and then it is built up slowly until they are over 12 months of age, giving there bones time to grow.

i would take her out more for socialisation, and let her excersise herself in the house and garden.

hi frank,
           I have 3 bullmastiffs,2 bitches and a dog.
We(the whole family) regulary!!! show our dogs(almost every weekend!!) so if you ever go to any shows, your sure to have seen our faces.
Its a great way to meet new bullmastiff friends and an even better feeling if your dogs do well in the showring.
Do you own bullies?

hi sambull, i have just put a deposit on a bullmastiff which i'll get in four weeks. iv'e been looking for a bullmastiff for ages and wanted to get the right one because i want to start showing her. Now though i'm not sure after reading about line breeding. what do you look for on there papers, if there family has some connection down the line?

since i have been looking on champ dogs message board i'm starting to really realise how little i know!

thanks frank

If the breeder shows successfully and are experienced in the breed they should hopefully sell you a show puppy if that is what you are looking for Frank.

The pedigree alone will not gurantee this because you can put 2 champions together that are not similar in type and get terrible puppies .

It is very complicated for sure

I would take her out as much as you can,not just for exercise but for  the socialisation. I have seen too many mastiffs in rescue purely because they were anti-social because the owners never took them out enough when they were pups :(

hi rose,
Yes i completely agree with what your saying,it is so important for your pup to mix with other people and dogs, just dont overdo on the excersise.
Places i go with my pups are:to pick the kids up from school(plenty of people, dogs, cars, noise),ringcraft, training classes, our local town shopping centre(go in the car, walk them roung for 5-10 mins come back)inviting people round to your house(some bullies are quite territorial if visitors dont come often)hope this helps,

                                                    sam

p.s this applies to all breeds not just mastiff breeds!

I would have to say that the shopping centre would have to be one of the best places to socialise a dog. There are all sorts of folk, heaps of different noises and your pup is guaranteed plenty of pats by alot of different people :D

If your dog can take the shops in her stride, she can handle just about anything :)

One thing i definately would not reccomend is tying dogs up outside shops or wherever and leaving them! I have seen dogs harrassed by bratty kids walking past and a once well socialised dog can turn into a blithering mess and the owner has no idea why

I really think tethering should be banned, especially in backyards and such.Sorry to go off topic :p
