Could anyone tell me what to expect from a puppy recovering from fading puppy. we had a litter of 8 puppies and sadly the mother died during emergancy surgery we have hand reared them all, but 6 fell ill with fading puppy possible caused by the Canine herpes virus, we lost 3 but the other 3 although pretty ill at the time have made a full recovery and look just like normal healthy puppies.

My question is will this disease have any effect on them in later life I have read somewhere that there may be liver of Kidney damage which shows up at a later date, does anyone have any experience of pups who have pulled through fading puppy and can they give me any reassurance my vet can tell me virtually nothing on the subject and was next to useless when nursing the ill ones.

Thank you

the fading puppy is the least of your worries i'm afraid. the pups will have the herpes virus. how did you know that the virus was infecting your bitch. or was it the stud dog which had it.
Try giving you pups Actimal or ask your vet for a pro biotic. these work wonders on poorly pups
Good luck. sorry to hear about the loss of you bitch it awful when that happens

I had a fading puppy litter, the dam was fine, but we never found the cause of the fading puppy. It was thought at the time it might have been caused by a virus as there was spotting on the major organs when the pups were pm'd.

The remaining 5 all recovered and lived their full span of life, making it to 10 years plus.

Neither dam nor pups were bred after that, however.
