I am having trouble getting insurance for my 8 year old lab. She is in great condition, but is getting penalised because of her age. Does anyone know of any companies who will insure older dogs at competitive rates. I would be grateful for any information as it is getting quite frustrating!!!!!

Have you tried Sainsbury's pet insurance? I decided to change my insurer (fell out with the other one long story etc). I have now been with Sainsbury's for I think this is my second year with them and my dog is 11. I pay 9.99 a month and the cover looks good

No I haven't tried them, but I certainly will now. l need to look for competitive prices as I have two labs, the other one is 4 though, so doesn't pose a problem. Is the Sainsbury's one available on the web? Thanks for your help.

Just out of interest how did you get your dog insured if they weere over 8 years old ? Most insurers won't insure if they are over 8 yrs? Does this mean that Sainsbury do?

according to my vet, Sun alliance offer a package especially for older dogs,don't have any info on it though, think it's that 'more than' insurance lot

Certainly does, my dog was born in April 1991 and I insured him with Sainsbury's in July 2000, so that makes him 9! It costs me 9.99 a month and I get vets fees up to £1800 per illness (I think) now I know you can get better cover than this but it is better than nothing, and they probably do offer better for younger dogs. I don't want to sound like an advert for them but I have only had good experiences with them, had to make a claim and they were great, their number is 0845 60 70 128.

Thank you for your input. I found a site on the web, E and L insurance who do discounts for multiple pets, which is ideal for my two. It worked out pretty reasonable and they insure dogs over 8 years.

E & L insurance have been known to be 'tricky' to get payments out of if you ever need to claim :-((

I can confirm what Fran has said. In one case, a dog was staying with a friend over night whilst the owner had a cancer treatment. The dog jumped a 5' garden hedge and managed to get run over in a nearby road. He ended up with 24 pins and two metal plates in his hind leg (£1500) E&L refused at first, to honour the claim, as the dog was tag-less at the time of impact! They soon changed there mind when I mentioned it in my dogworld breed notes and they were sent the notes! I have since heard of other such cases.

E & L is the company I 'fell out' with and moved to Sainsbury's!

Im insured with PetPlan but recently i received a leaflet from Asda offering competitive insurance that covers all breeds and ages. To be perfectly honest i didnt really read it but might be worth checking out?

I insured my two adult rescue dogs whose ages were estimated at 7 with Direct Line Insurance at very competitive rates. When one of them was run over within a couple of months of taking out the policy there was no questions asked and the payments made straight away at a considerable cost!! Can't fault them at all. And better still my premium did not jump up considerably in second year.
