Gwen started bloating Thurs night, I was in bed reading when she came into the bedroom, lay down the got up & went out hurriedly, then I heard her trying to be sick & then she came back, OH said there was nothing there. She become increasing restless & drank some water then tried being sick, then went back for more water, at that stage I quickly took the water away, she kept on trying be sick. Then her sides staretd to swell & I rang the vet, arranged to meet at his clinic. As we were going thru the front door she started to vomit, then some more outside, anyway by the time we got the vets her sides had started to go down. He gave her xray, buscopan injectable & we waited. Panting stopped, breathing returned normal & she was better, but what a fright, I was so worried! We got home at 2am & she went straight on her bed with a look as if to say, are you mad woman, fancy taking me out at this hour, curled up & went fast asleep :) I stayed up till after 3 to make sure she OK & of course she was bright as a button when she got up in the morning, me I`m still shattered now!!!!!!

Christine, I know just how you're feeling!  One of ours bloated last November, but fortunately, like Gwen, managed to vomit before we got to the vet's; in fact, his sides were all but down by the time the vet arrived at the surgery and he greeted him with a happily wagging tail! At least he had the courtesy to do it early evening though :)

But it was the scariest thing, the first signs and thinking "oh no, this is it", phoning the vet and him saying "I'm on my way now" and not "watch him for a while and see how he goes" when described the symptoms, and the worst case scenarios running through your head.  It took me days to settle down again!

Thank heavens Gwen's bloating episode had a happy ending too :)

Hi Christine,
sorry to hear you've had such a bad night with Gwen. Good to hear she's OK again.  :-)

Make sure you get an early night tonight! :-D

Hi Christine,
I found with my bitch once she had done this over the next few weeks I had to watch her very closely as she would start to bloat again. I kept milk of magnesia handy as advised by my vet, and at the first signs gave her some. She would sound hollow if I gently tapped on her sides.

Thanks for the kind thoughts guys :)
You know Gwen had op for bloat when she was 3mths, she had just got over parvo, vet said good job we hadn`t left it her spleen was about to twist :( Sweep had op for same thing17mths ago, it was at the time when my male was very poorly.
Good tip about the milk of magnesia, haven`t seen it for ages but will make a point of finding it on Monday, can`t have too many things for *just in case* in my book :D I really think stress has something to do with it, each time it`s happened it`s been at a stressful time for both me & the dogs & stress isn`t good for the digestion is it?
Will be keeping my eye on her, fingers crossed it won`t happen again!
