hi everyone, help needed with my boy he is a nine month old gsd and up until recently been very happy on nutro large breed puppy ( as long as had a bit of chappie on top) but over passed couple of days not eaten any of it, as he is on the lean side anyway not happy that he is not eating although he would happily scoff pigs ears all day. i was thinking of trying him on either jwb or royal canin junior does anyone out there now which one is the most benificual for him and his growth. i really would like to keep him on dried food of a very good quality please advise

I had my GSD on Royal Canin. It has a very good reputation and they do a special one for GSD. My problem with the food was that she was always hungry but if I fed more than on the packet she developed loose bowels. Also her health was not good (cystitus,anal gland problems,dermodicosis and ring worm). I stuck with it untill 7 months old and then swapped to tins and Pedigree Mixer. This seemed to satisfy her better but her coat was not as glossy as it used to be on the Royal Canin. I am now 6 months later embarking on the raw feeding regime in an effort to improve her health. Such good reports from feeding this way on the Forum. I will be taking my first delivery of raw produce on Saturday having read all the books on the subject. Will keep everyone informed as to how we get on.

My rescue GSD had many health problems, and I,  like you Gaby, decided raw was the way to go and embarked on the BARF diet nearly 2 yrs ago and her health has improved no end, she used to be fussy, dull coat, bad teeth etc. Now problems of the past....thank goodness :)

My two GSD are fed on Arden Grange and I am happy with the results.

I have fed royal canin-mini-junior in the past to dogs who got sick of their usual kibble,it has a distinct livery smell to it which most dogs just love.Altho it has a premium price tag i wouldnt really call it a premium food,too grain heavy and it uses BHA as a preservative,but these things dont bother some people and the majority of dogs just seem to love it! Maybe you could alternate between JWB and R.C and see which one your dog likes and does best on.Or stick to your current food and add  some naturediet and alternate betwwen those flavours.

I really cant blame dogs who get bored eating the same food day in day out(wouldnt you),dogs,like us need a large variety in proteins,vits.and  mins. etc. i still find it hard to believe that there's such a thing as complete and balanced "in a bag" and  that dogs will do just fine eating the same food,with the same ingredients and nothing else forever more,it just makes no sense   Also dogs who eat the same food for years tend to eventually develop allergies to said food,as they build up in the dogs system over time,if you keep to variety,this cant happen :) I know alot of kibble feeders who rotate their dogs food every 1-2 mths. depending how long the bag lasts,some feed 4-5 different dry foods,for the variety and the different protein sources,keeps the dogs and the owners happy.

Never ever heard of that one Rose ;) but glad you are acknowledging that not everyone worries about permitted levels of preservations used, thank you :)
