My dog has a smallish red raised spot next to her nose. Does anyone know what this could be, or could it just be a spot like we get?

Hi,

It could be folliculitis, an infection in the hair follicle.  I would just leave it and see how it goes, my 20 month old lab got loads of spots as she was growing up and none bothered her.  However my other lab who is 9 months is on antibiotics at the moment for a bad case of folliculitis under her chin, it is all swollen, with very big red inflammed lumps which are weeping slightly.

Any advice from others that have had this would be appreciated as I am only going by what the vet/books say but I can see that whatever it is does need treatment with antibiotics.

Thank you for your reply.

She is 7 now so does this still bother older dogs?

Thanks again as any advice is great.

Any other advice would be appreciated.

My youngest was the only one to have suffered what the vet referred to as "teenage acne"! :)  If i recall correctly, I think he was put on a short course of antibiotics, and they cleared up in no time.  If you are at all concerned heatherw_01, you should just pop her down to the vets to let them give her a quick once over-at least that way you'll know! :)

I suppose they are as prone to getting spots as we are, and that never ends!!!

Unfortunately I had to call the vet again as my pups tablets are finished and her chin is no better!  Trust her to get this just before I take her to her first show.... She is now on a 2 week course and hopefully this will do the trick.  I'm cleaning it with a mild solution of salt and water and putting a tiny amount of antibiotic cream on it as well.  I do know of an older lab that is getting small warts on her body and some of these look quite red.  Just watch that she doesn't scratch at it or catch it as this old lab did scratch one wart and it wouldn't stop bleeding.  Dont worry she was taken to the vets and been checked over.

Cheers

I read this on another list from someone who's Boxer had persistant acne. She had tried both antibiotics (which worked until the course of treatment finished) and homeopathic remedies (which helped but did not clear it completely). She is now dosing with Aloe Vera Juice (15ml twice a day) and adds half a cup of colloidal silver water to approx 1 gallon of dog's drinking water. There has been a great improvement over the course of a week and she is hopeful that it will prove a long-term solution.
