Topic Dog Boards / Health / 3 month cycle?
- By Lady [gb] Date 31.01.05 17:23 UTC
Lady is a nine month old Border Terrier. She had her first heat at six months and seems to be starting another now, just three months later. Does anyone have experience of such a short cycle? The last heat was the full show so my vet is puzzled. It doesn't seem to be urinary infection or phantom pregnancy.

It may just be a funny season, like humans dogs don't always settle down right away.  Give it another season and see what happends.  Maybe contact the breeder of your bitch.  See if her bitches are the same!

hi,
I know dogs that have had that, they have a season, then 3 weeks after they have another one, it is not uncommon. Mabe it is a thing that all of the bitches in the litter have experienced. Ask the breeder what you shoud do, they will have more experience in these matters;)

That would be a split season Izzi, the posters bitch came in Three MONTHS later.  My oldest bitch did this, she is now nearly 13.  she had a season at 6, 9, 12, 16, 22, and then finally 29 months when she was mated.

Her daughter went a month, then five then 6 monthly intervals.  That ones daughter was classic 6 to 7 months from the start, and her daughter got confused into coming in early on her second season as Mum was in, that was 5 months, then 6, and now tends to go about 7 months or so.  The youngest one seems to be a bit more like the eldest.

My puppy came in season start of April, then 16 weeks later at the end of July, then again the middle of December 20 weks later.  Some of her ancestors have started in similar fashion and finally settled dwon at about 6 to 7 month intervals.  Usually an interval of less than 4 months means that they may not be ovulating.  In an older bitch wildly variable interseasonal intervals are often due to cystic ovaries.

My 4 year old had a litter last year, came in season the usual 6 months and then again 3 months later, nightmare for my boys, my parents who had to look after her and me !!  The one that I'm wanting to come into season still hasn't, she lives with my parents so I've swapped my girls for her to come to mine and see if the magic coming in season house will work on her :d :d
