Hi, I have a Newfie with arterial stenosis and wondered if anyone out there has a dog with this?  He is symptom free at present and on atenalol (beteblocker) drugs. Haven't met anyone who has a dog with this before, however I know it isn't that rare and can occur in boxers too. By the way, we fully researched the breeders and he WAS hip scored and heart teasted before we brought him home. The cardiologist at the vets said that this can develop quickly, as he picked it up when our boy went for his first check at 8 wks old. I have to say that the breeders were excellent and helped in everyway possible.

It is the parents, the grandparents, etc. that need to have had all the tests, not the puppy. Even from parents that test clear it is possible that problems will crop up in a puppy. How old is your dog now? Is the diagnosis of AS definite or is it possible that he has a 'puppy murmur'?

Thanks for your reply. They are tracing the problem to his father. My pup is 15 months old now, I had hoped when he was younger that it was a 'innocent puppy murmur' but he has had two dopplers and his condition is severe. however I think the vet thinks he is a medical mystery because he has no symptoms of fainting etc, when he diagnosed he said that he probably would not reach his second birthday. I hope this is wrong but we try not to focus on the bad, he is a happy boy and looks GREAT!

Hi wellie, one of my friends GSD was diagnosed with this condition after he collapsed after a walk. I think he was probably about 18 months old then, and hadn't showed any previous signs of illness. The Vet told her the same, a short lifespan, but he was 8yrs old when he had to be PTS, due to a spinal desease, and nothing to do with his heart. He lived a good and active life, as she said you can wrap him up in cotton wool and he lives a miserable existence, or treat him as normal and give him a good "life".
My own GSD was diagnosed by my Vet with "possible" arterial stenosis at the age of 10 months (slight heart murmur and irregular heart beat), and was referred to a Vet Cardiorespiratory Centre (www.martinreferrals.com), deeper scans showed a condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (hole in the heart). She had a major operation whereby Mr Martin put an occluder (designed for  use in children) in through an artery in her back leg, and at her last check up, her heart had actually decreased in size.
It's hard, but I think that all you can do is give them the BEST possible life ever, so even if it is a short life, at least they will have been well loved and cherished.  I'm sure your dog will live a long and happy life. Best wishes Sue x
