Unless she is underweight I would not be increasin her fod intake until the end of the fifth week and then only slightly so that by whelping she is on half as much again as her normal ration bit of a higher quality food.  I would fed her a dry puppy food in prefernce to tinned.  I can't recoomend Arden Grange Prestige or Classic Puppy enogh for feeding Mum and pups.  Autarky puppy seems to be enjoyed by both, and Pedigree Profesional and Royal Canin also seem very palatable.

You should offfer her her food several times a day, as there will be times when she will not feel hungry but be ready for it a few hours later.

How far into her pregnancy is she? I wouldn't increase her food at all until the 6th week, and then only up the protein and decrease the carbohydrate levels.

I have never fed my girl on anything other than normal dog food but just increased with the addition of vetzyne just to increase her vitamin intake then once she has the pups put her onto puppy food she especially loved Bakers.   Towards the end she did get a little pampered and had very small meals of basically what we had as she never had much room.  She never lost her coat or had any trouble feeding the pups.  When she first had them she went off her food and I feed her on frolic which is very fatty but my lot absolutely love it. She had two litters of 13 and one of 12.

Hope this helps

Frolic has anawful lot of Sugar as well as fat, as do all the foods with the plasic like soft chunks.  As an odd treat they are OK but long term could cause you problems at least with the teeth.  I would also avoid foods with unnecesary colurants (like Bakers) as they are there for the owners benefit (pretty shapes too) rather than the dogs.

Bitches certainly shouldn't loose theri coats in pregnancy, as the cyclical hair growth will all be in the growht phase, so she should have a super coat (expect a little loss around the nipples though).  bitches will have a heavy moult, down to bare boards after the litter are weaned, but by then their coats are getting pretty tattered wh9ile nurding and raising the litter.  In a heavy coated breed the hair loss can be quite shocking if you hadn't expected,a dn the bitch looks horendous just as new owners are picking up their pups, especuially if any have not gone by 8 to 12 weeks.

I did forget to say that meals should be split ifnot several a day as and when she wants them

Just to clarify a point  Brainless as I said I only use Bakers and Frolic post whelping as my lot adore the stuff a bit like humans with sweets.  The protein content on both is far too high for long term use.

If she is not underweight she does not need building up.A bitch should be a fit healthy weight when put into whelp with no excess weight and should not be fed extra to gain excess body fat(fed extra towards the end as Brainless says yes) whilst pregnant.

Please, keep her on her usual diet until she's about 6 weeks pregnant. Over-feeding a pregnant bitch is not wise. And if she proves to not be pregnant you'll also have problems.

you could try cooked minced beef mixed with dry dog food that way she will be getting a good blend of vitamins ect.
