Investigating the possibility of  the adoption of 2 Jack Russell puppies. As first time dog owners in a lively family, consisting of a 9 yr old girl, a 10 yr old boy and with three confident cats in Gloucestershire.
Looking to seek advice and then locate a reputable breeder.
Have registered to attend training classes, anyone have any advice, please?

As you say you're new to dogs I wouldn't recommend two puppies at once. They're not 'Double-Trouble' - they're Trouble Squared! The best advice I can give is to get one puppy and raise it to the standard of training and general obedience that you're happy with before you add another to the family.

Hi Guest,

Why not register here - it's simple to do and free.  That way you can ask specific questions and answer any replies given to you ;)

As a bit of advice to start with, taking on two puppies at one time is VERY hard work even for the most experienced doggy family.  As first time owners it would be advisable to get one pup first, spend at least a year on training, socialising, basically having fun and ensuring your have a happy, well adjusted and obedient family dog before introducing another one.   JR aren't the easiest of breeds for first timers either :P so do lots of research on their characters and training requirements etc and also make sure that what you find out about them fits into what you want for your family pet.

There's lots of advice available on here and some could no doubt help with you finding a reputable breeder of your chosen breed when the time is right - if registered then other members will have contact details for you etc.

HTH meantime,
Regards, Teri :)

Thanks for taking the time to share some valuable insights.I must appear very naive, the motivation for a puppy is strong but has been put off until the children reached a more responsible age. Jack Russell's are the only dog's my children have come in contact with on a regular basis, hence the leaningtowards the breed. How would you advice invstigating a more suitable candidate for the Russell menagerie...?

Have you thought about visiting Crufts in March? There is a large section called 'Discover Dogs' where you can meet dogs of all KC recognised breeds and talk to their owners about their suitability for your individual circumstances. It may well be that you return to the idea of a JRT (bearing in mind your surname!) or a Parson Russell, but at least you'll know it's through positive choice rather than anything else.

Hi Stephen,

Welcome to the Board ;)  Aaaah, so the JR was already a namesake - have to ask would you call a male Jack?  :D

If you and your family have had lots of frequent contact with the breed and enjoyed them then there's no reason for you to look at alternatives - they are nice little dogs but as with all terriers they can be feisty .....

The best places to start looking at different ideas for dog breeds are the Kennel Club website and some of hundreds of UK dog related web sites.   There are lots of books too so the library is worth visit and if you live anywhere near a venue that holds dog shows it is definitely worth visiting a few and meeting different breeds in person and being able to talk with their owners about how easy they are to train, groom, exercise etc.  If you can then narrow down your possible breeds to say 3 or 4, it is then easier to contact breed clubs and also get info direct from similar owners on here about what you expect from your new family member and how much time etc you can commit to it's various needs.  Some breeds are much easier to care for than others :P

Good point JG, Crufts and Discover Dogs!!!!!!!

Nice to meet you,
Teri :)

You won't find the Jack Russell Terrier at Crufts as its not an english KC breed.........although a trip across the water to Dublin for the St Patricks day show will bring you in contact with a number of small Jacks, i will be there with about 10! Also you could attend a few working terrier shows where you will see different types of Jacks.
