I am looking for a stud dog in the South Ayrshire/Dumfries and Galloway area, probably for end March/beg April. This would be my bitches first litter. She is 2.6 yrs.

Talk to your bitches breeder - you need to consider pedigree lines, suitable structure to compliment your girl etc. It is not just a case of finding a local stud dog.

The little old lady who I got my bitch from was not a breeder as such. Would all not be ok as long as the lines were not close? My bitch is quite small so I imagine I do not want a huge dog? I only want one litter and have a list of people who want pups , all for pets not for showing, breeding etc.

A complete outcross as you describe is a gamble because you don't know what characteristics you're introducing into the pups. Although you say the pups are 'only' going to be purely pets, it's vital that you do all you can to ensure they're going to be mentally and physically healthy; that means research, research, research. And, of course, ensuring that both your bitch and the stud dog have passed all the breed-relevant tests to try to eliminate hereditary conditions.

Excellent advice JG.  Can I also add that it is as important, if not more important, to research the sire & dam's parents eg the pups grandparents.  Problems in health and temperament often skip a generation and rear their ugly heads again! :)  That is as essential for pets as it is for showdogs, remembering that most show dogs are pets too!
It's not good enough to be able to say that your bitch and the dog are "nice".
