hi nice subject to start the day, after a bout of illness my boys vet has put him on lomitil to slow down the passage of his poo to help with temporary, very slight faecal incontinence. i have been advised to put him on food /or supplements that both bulk and firm his stool. as it would be trial and error and that he is a very fussy eater with a sensetive tummy it would be difficult to find something that works gave the usual suggestions of rice potato etc. he is already on wafcol salmon and potato plus a little fish or chicken and some cesar. i have added extra potato and that made things squshier,he does not tolerate rice very well [his sicks it up] wheat products are out because of his sensetive tummy . also i do know that extra fibre causes faster transient of the poo so how will that work? this has been a very long affair and i am getting confused. the objective is to slow, bulk, and firm his stool without upseting his stomach any ideas anyone pppllleeeeeeezzzzzzeeee

Raw bone firms up stools such as chicken wings or lamb/pork ribs - must be raw though :)

Hi Pru
Have you tried some pro-biotics to try and restore normal gut function? I haven't had experince of this with my dogs but after a serious bout of illness and long term use of antibiotics left my horse with the runs and his food passing way too quickly through him, the vet gave him some pro-biotics which helped greatly. Just a thought :-)

Bio Yoghurt is great for helping sensitive tums after the runs (oooh poetry ! ) after antibiotics its very effective at 'normalising' things, cheap too :) Have you tried him on Autarky? Its mainly chicken and maize - no wheat or gluten. If he's definately sensitive to wheat it might be an idea to check the label of the Caesar very carefully, it could contain wheat starches or proteins (best to be safe, its surprising where you will find wheat) also be very careful of doggy treats many contain wheat.
Fibogel, green packet, natural flavour, from your local chemist, 30 sachets in a pack about £4.00 + VAT. Works by absorbing excess moisture in bowel thus firm stools. For medium or large breed use 1 sachet with evening meal. Vets will not recommend this simply because you are not buying it from them and they are not making any profit from it (all vets put their own interests first), but it works like magic. Stick to a good quality bag food ; don't complicate things with all the other odds and ends you are feeding.
Hi Pru
Do you know what is actually causing the faecal incontinence? Is it really incontinence or is he going too often.
If going too often or too loose then sometimes something as simple as cutting down on the amount can help - less food, more time to digest it rather than passing any extra straight through.
My oldest bitch is becoming faecally incontinent due to her arthritis. Fortunately as she is raw fed it comes out as a solid ball that frequently does not even smell (so we have to keep our eyes open in case we tread on it). She is not aware of it happening.
A natural way is to use pumpkin (or similar) as this apparently acts as a sponge and absorbs the excess fluid (if he is "loose" when incontinent). Strangely enough can also be given when constipated as will release the fluid
