Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / keepers mix food supplement

Has anyone ever used keepers mix supplement from Dorwest herbs? Its a very fine green powder which you are supposed to add a little to their food. I was trying to give it to ellie my retriever as her nose has chaned colour and so i presume she must be short of some nutrients. However, she who normally will eat anything from do food to cat and horse poo, absolutely refuses to eat it. I tried adding it to her usual dry food. She picks at it and spits bits out. I tried putting it with some cat food which she loves. SHe sniffed it and walked away. I wrapped some in a piece of ham. She put it in her mouth and then spat it out. I can't think of any way to give it to her. Ok she doesn't have to have it, but i have a big pot that needs using, and the little that she has had seems to have made a difference to her. Does anyone have any ideas?

Mine won't eat it either.I would suggest kelp tablets for pigment

Can't help as mine eat it without a problem :) Mine don't have dry food, so I suppose that it blends in with the moist meat. Do you need to add it to dry food ?

Mine aren't too keen on it, but will eat it mixed in with their evening meal (raw). I would go with archer's suggestion of using tablets as I can't see you being very successful in adding it to a dry food.

I give my the green ark organic 'green food supplement' which my dogs have no problem with and its cheaper.

Does it contain the same ingredients as the Keepers mix? If so I may get that instead as I can order it when I order my raw in future.

It contains Kelp, Alfalfa, Nettle and Parsley. from what I gather it is similar to the keepers mix.

I used to mix it with Fagans meat and he would refuse to eat it, even my mums dog who is a right gannet wont eat it if it has keepers mix in it so I have a whole tub of it at home going to waste

Two of mine eat it as long as it is well mixed in and two won't touch their food with it in.  I also bought a large tub of Nupro at a show in the summer, and none of them will touch their food with it in - even the smelliest tripe is left if there is any Nupro in the dish.  It is so annoying as it is an enormous tub and cost about £40.  I bought it when I went over to BARF, as I wanted them to have some supplements because their coats had lost the shine on the natural diet.  But I've just ended up with tubs of expensive supplements that I can't use.  I think I am a dog supplement junkie, if I see something that promises benefits to the dogs I buy it and it then stands on a shelf for the next few years beause they won't touch it.  Some people hoard shoes, I hoard doggy supplements!

Count me in too :o I have shelves full of supplements, alot from Dorwest.I dont buy the powdered form of anything anymore as i know none of my dogs will eat it! Therefore i am forced to pop capsules and tablets down their throats which is a big fat pain :(
I definately am a doggie supplement junkie,i love buying new things for them, most is human grade an yet i cant be bothered takin any of them myself!

PJW  i am so disheartened by your post about Nupro, this was going to be the next thing i was going to buy,i belong to alot of american dog sites and they all swear by it and apparantly *no dog can refuse it* as it has a very strong livery smell,is this correct? My dogs love baked liver so i would have thought they would like nupro???

Whats your description on it?? I would love to hear another point of view :) Do you mix it to make a gravy and pour over their food?

I use sho-glo, all natural product in liquid form just put it in their water, Tia just licks it from the spoon, from Osmonds, Coats are good, blacks are really shiney and a good blue/black

I am a self confessed herbal junkie. Particularly anything that is meant to have a calming effect as they are both a bag of nerves. So far nothing has had the desired effect and i am sure the dogs hate me for it!!

The Nupro I got was the one with the joint supplement as I have a big-boned breed.  The smell is very strong and you need to use quite a bit of it.  The dosing scoop is bigger than an egg cup and I had to give one and a half scoops.  There is no way I could hide that amount in the food.  If I mixed it in or made it into a gravy, they wouldn't touch it at all.  I contacted Nupro and they advised giving less and trying to hide it.  However, they simply left the portion of food where it was hidden in the middle of the dish, so that was no good.  It is very strong smelling and impossible to disguise, and after a few days I have to say that I came to hate the smell.  I was very disappointed.  At least with Keepers it's only a very small dosing scoop and it is much easier to hide it among smelly tripe or gravy.

Don't forget over supplementing can be dangerous for your dog as it is in humans.

Thats why it's advisable to research everything you are giving to your dogs. RESEARCH, i cannot emphasise that word enough!
I give mine Royal Jelly but it is not advised to be given to dogs or humans who are allergic to bee stings or who have asthma.
I usually read and learn about stuff before i even think about buying it.

I`ve used the Hilton Natural Rearing seaweed mineral food with good success & my dogs didn`t turn their noses up either :)

I recently obtained a liquid supplement from Dorwest, Elderberry & Nettle.   It's supposed to improve pigment.  As its liquid it just soaks into dry food and Molly doesn't even notice it.  Early days yet to see any improvement.  Living in hope!
