Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Advice please
- By Sandie [gb] Date 19.01.05 15:31 UTC
I have 2 dogs that keep fighting for dominance, this has been going on for about 2 months now and seems to be getting worse as neither dog will give in.
I spoke to my vet and she has adviced having them both casterated, she said this will calm them. I am not so sure that this is the answer.
Can anyone who has been through this type of problem give me some advice please.

Can you tell us how old they are?

Castrating both will cure nothing. They'll still be equal. You need to make a difference between them, so you should only castrate the more submissive of the two.

Can you tell us a bit more about the dogs? ie are they related, what breed, etc. and do they seem to fight over your affection, or other things?

They are 2 and 2and half, they are not related.
They are fine 75% of the time but they cant sort out between them who is top dog.
The younger one usually starts it by growling at the older one, this starts the older one off and he keeps pushing the younger one and swinging his rear end into him, eventually the younger one snaps and bites him, its over in a flash and the older one never bites the younger one just annoys him.
The younger one also tends to attack if he is frustrated or is told to stop doing something we dont want him to do he turns and has a go at the older dog as if he blames him.
When we take them out and return they have a standoff at the door and its quite frightening. Its very quickly over but I just need to stop it before one gets hurt.
They do sometimes fight over our affection but I would not say it was the main cause nor over food.
They are springers,

Have both had thourough vet exams and blood tests?  It's very unusual for Springers to behave in such a way with other dogs.....

They are both absolutely fine with other dogs and play really well, its just with each other.
