Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / raw food diet
- By spike [gb] Date 17.01.05 05:17 UTC
I have a 15 week old staffordshire bull terrier.I have taken a  keen interest in raw feeding.Over the past 2-3 weeks i have been feeding her prizechoice raw meat( tripe, rabbit, beef and kidney, white fish, ect),chicken thighs and wings, beef heart, grated carrot and apple, a good nuckle bone, pigs ear or ribs a couple of times a week. She also eats a small bowl of pedigree complete puppy.I feed her 3 times a day.Morning raw, afternoon complete and raw again in the evening. Is this diet ok?  or do i have to add a suplament of some sort?
Thanks very much. Spike

Sounds fine to me :) Why give the dry food ? Have you tried giving her raw eggs (shell as well), tinned pilchards in tomato sauce or if she'll eat them, raw sardines :) Mine love banana especially as well as pieces of satsuma :)

That sounds fine - you have all avenues covered, and yet still have dietary flexibility.
:)

As Jeangenie has said, this is fine, I feed the same way for months before taking the leap to completely raw. No additives are needed

your lucky she eats the complete in the afternoon !!
- By Dawn B [gb] Date 17.01.05 20:10 UTC
Yes, everything everybody else has said, but I would drop the complete altogether.

Any reason why, Dawn?

Thanks everyone for their comments.Im still trying to get used to feeding raw. I get a bit paranoid i`ve been missing something out to help her develope and grow properly as a puppy.( the reason i was giving her  the complete). Now my mind has been put at rest i will  remove the dry food and feed completly raw,and also try her on eggs with shell and raw sardines annd pilchards.I think  raw feeding is brilliant and thank you all for sharing your knowledge.Spike

I read on a previous post that you shouldnt feed raw eggs???

Now I am confused!!

Is there a BARF BIBLE!! ?? If not maybe someone should write one!!
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 18.01.05 11:13 UTC
Raw eggs are fine...especially if you include the shell. The Britbarf website is one of the best to get advice . Barf bibles are available, by a few different authors, I use Dr Ian Billinghursts books ..Give Your Dog a Bone as well as others...

also thought tomatoes werent a good idea? We feed the eggs cooked scrambled with milk, try that she'll love it
- By Daisy [gb] Date 18.01.05 14:35 UTC
Eggs are better fed raw :)

Theres nothing wrong with tomatoes but some dogs can't tolerate milk
Eggs are better raw(with shell if possible)

yes i know someone had said on one board her dog sadly died from Neosporosis thats why i mentioned it
- By Christine Date 18.01.05 22:11 UTC
Freezing only halts muliplication of bacteria, once it`s defrosted the bacteria that was there before freezing will still be  :)

ps fresh raw eggs & fresh raw meat & fresh raw fruit n veg are fine to feed to your dogs :)

And thank you Christine :D I cant explain,

What steps can be taken to eliminate or limit our pets’ exposure? I am still not convinced that a healthy, holistically cared for pet is the optimal candidate for contracting this parasite. In my discussions with the experts on Neospora, I was led to believe that the treatment of meat to inactivate Toxoplasmosis should also inactivate Neospora. We know that cooking will do this, but it was also interesting to find out that freezing the meat for 24 hours should also kill the organism.

this was taken from the following site, sorry cant do links

No need for thanks Kayc :D :D :D

Who`s the experts you`ve discussed it with?

As far as I`m concerned it`s impossible to eliminate neospora or all the other nasty bugs that share our world with us! We can work with what we`ve got & thats an immune system, keep it up & running to the best of it`s ability with the best nutrition we can give it & hope for the best :D

Hi Christine,  sorry,I should have put little asterix in that paragraph, It wasnt me who spoke to the experts. This was an excerpt taken from the site which I was reading on raw meat. Sorry if I didnt make it clear.

Thats why I dont explain things, I am crap at it :D :D

Stay here long enough & you`ll pretty soon learn to explain yourself Kyc ;) :D
Or better still, learn to do links & let the *experts* explain it for you! :D

Most Barfers freeze because you tend to buy in bulk ...unless you can get to the butchers and get fresh everyday it makes sense to freeze food :)
- By ClaireH [gb] Date 21.01.05 22:13 UTC
Barfers? :D lol @ Mel. That's something I haven't been called before, well until now. :D :D :D
