we are thinking about a blue heeler to add to our family, i need to know is this breed ok around chickens? ours run loose.

Hi Amanda,

Do you mean the Australian Cattle dog - referred to as a blue heeler on a TV series?  Could be wrong, there may be a breed called blue heeler but can't say I'm familiar with it ;)

If it's an ACD, look up the KC website for more info.  As to their suitability around chickens, they are a herding breed so may be inclined to round them up :D but if you get any breed from puppy (8 weeks) you should be able to train it to restrain itself.  I have a herding/guarding breed but three of mine have been in among literally hundreds of chickens and didn't bat an eyelid at them and that was as adults without previous experience of any free range birds.
