whats the cheapest feeding barf or supermarket brands
- By hairypooch Date 16.01.05 17:11 UTC
it shouldn't really come down to the cheapest way to feed, but what is best for your dog. What do you mean by supermarket brands? The horrible mush that says dog food on the tin? If that is a consideration of yours then I would strongly advise against it. For many many reasons, it may keep a dog alive but it won't do any good for the long term health.

BARF is relatively cheap to feed, you can get it from your butcher or even the discount shelf in the supermarket, providing you feed/freeze it immediately. If you incorporate veg, fish, eggs into the diet then again, it doesn't cost the earth.

Find a good butcher and ask what and if he can supply.  My butcher is excellent, next to the cattlemarket, and slaughterhouse, and is licensed by Defra so is able to sell me anything from the animals. I get a box of 150-200 chicken stock carcasses for around £5.00 all trotters etc are free. If I take the whole tripe which weighs around 40 kilos, gives me that free as well, he minces my beef with the amount of fat I require, usually burger quality, but without any seasonings etc. min order only needs to be 5 kilos and charges me 50p per lb. On average I feed 7 dogs for around £45ish per month. Market towns usually (not always) have good butchers.  If you dont ask...... :D

Oh I feel awful now, sorry :D   When I started fully feeding raw about 3 months ago (dabbled for a few months before that) I was buying chicken wings etc and butcher asked me why the quantities, I explained it was for the dogs, so he started getting me tons of stuff that I would never have thought to ask for, I was buying lambs hearts etc, he now gives me ox hearts (1 feeds 5 adult labs per meal) etc. He is a good old fashioned slaughterhouse butcher, he gets the whole carcass and does all the butchering himself, no middleman.  The stock carcasses and chicken wings come in a great big box. And... he loves my dogs. :D Just some of the advantages of living in a small town with a slaughterhouse.

Money shouldnt really be a consideration when you feed dogs, you should be able to afford to feed the best.It really grates me when i see people buying the bottom of the barrel foods from the supermarkets because "they cant afford the good stuff" if they cant afford to feed a decent food then they probaly cant afford to take their pets to the vet either etc. People like these should not have pets!
I recently had the oportunity to buy a bull mastiff pup from excellent lines, she was just perfect ;) But i didnt take her because i couldnt afford to feed the diet that she and my other 4 dogs deserve, sure i could have bought her and stuck them all on pedigree or similar but i just couldnt do it to them,it would weigh on my concience to heavily as well as possibly putting their excellent health at risk!!

In answer to op's original question,it depends which way you look at it,you could feed a cheapo supermarket brand(theyr'e pretty much all crap) and you could end up with loads of health problems and huge vet bills that would cost you a hundred times more than feeding a species appropriate diet(raw food).
If your'e a dilligent shopper and buy in bulk you can pick up really great specials on meat, rmb's,veg etc. and know your'e doing the best by your pet unlike feeding garbage supermarket brands where you dont know what your getting from one batch to the next :(

Feeding the food you buy from supermarkets doesnt work out cheaper my friend feeds Bakers and I feed perscription food for Abby she still spends more money every month than I do. She is now changing to Burns as even though it is a better foodshe will pay about halve what she is paying now.

I agree with Rose, money shouldn't be a consideration. If you can afford to buy a puppy then you should be able to afford to feed it probably.
Buying from a  supermarket is more expensive so you should seek out suppliers where you can buy in bulk at half the cost.  Unfortunately most butchers now buy their meats prepacked (like supermarkets) so don't have rbms. We have a little butcher/abbatoir not far from me where I could get whole tripes but since they changed the regs I can no longer get them unless I have a licence so I now rely on my supplier for them, which isn't a problem other than I pay an extra 50p each for them. But its worth it the dogs love it chopped up.
