Hello, on behalf of a friend, could you please advise at what age the roan markings will begin to show and at roughly what age will the markings remain the same as a fully grown adult? thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

Hello Maisy Moo

To answer your question, it will depend on whether the puppy in question is a dark or light roan & what colour it is (assuming we are talking about a puppy?) With a dark blue roan, the roan will be visible within days of birth, whereas with a very light blue roan, sometimes the roaning will not be clearly seen until 4 or 5 weeks (which is why it can be hard to distinguish a black & white from a light blue roan) If we are talking orange roans, it is a bit different - oranges are v pale to begin with & roaning may not be clearly visible until 6 weeks plus. Your question about when the markings remain the same as a fully grown adult is a bit difficult to answer as again, it depends on the base colour - the markings (patching) will never change but the different degrees of roaning can affect the appearance of a puppy for some time - puppies tend to gradually get darker as the puppy coat grows & then when their coat is ready to be stripped out (around 8 months), they suddenly can become several shades lighter to the surprise of their owner sometimes :-)

Hope that helps!

Jane

thank you for your quick response. My friend is due to choose her blue roan cocker pup this weekend and has found your response very useful. Many thanks
