Fortunately Yellow Flatcoats are now very rare. However, you should note that they can no longer be registered as "yellow" but are now registered as "non standard" by the Kennel club. The breed standard calls for black or liver only.
They are just as likely to come from black parentage as they are from liver. To get yellow both parents have to carry the yellow gene. And yes they are frowned upon and in my opinion they should be sold cheaply without any form of papers. Certainly they should not be sold for £500 to £600 which is the breed average. They should not be bred from although this has happened in the past.
They have been about since the turn of the century. Many people blamed a dog in the 1980s for the increase in yellows but as yellow was around a long time before he was this seems hardly logical although he did carry the yellow gene. You can get your dog "colour" DNA'ed which will tell you if it carrys the yellow gene. If it does it should not be mated to a dog that is also a carrier. We will never eliminate it now but it can be controlled.
Just my humble opinion!
