Topic Dog Boards / Health / Facial swelling..Urgent
- By dollface Date 08.01.05 15:02 UTC
I just woke up this morning and my 3 yr old boston terriers' face is all swollen, more one side then the other... It can't be (well don't see how it could be)  Rocky mountain fever since it is the middle of winter out here and no tree's or grass or anything where they are in my back yard and they are barely outside because of winter. I have 4 other dogs and all of them are fine. I have checked him for ticks and don't find anything.

I have smelled his breath and it smells fine, stuck my finger in his mouth and there is no foren object from what I can tell. Touched all his teeth to see if it hurt him and nothing. Does not seem to hurt him when I touch his face either.

He did have the runs on thursday I gave him some keopectate twice in the same day which I think cleared it up --  gonna have to watch him next time to make sure. He has had that many times before without and reaction.

The boston Iam talking about is Dozer my lil guy that was born with a rectal prolapse and gets diarrhea every now and then do to a sensitive tummy.

I have no idea what is wrong with him, my vet is not open till later so am waiting to call them.

Iam worried and have never had something like this happen before, of course I know when things pop up we all worry. I Would be grateful for any help any one has to offer.

Thank you :( worried

Could it be a tooth abcess? I know you say you have checked his mouth but I would have thought that it was the most obvious thing. Hope you get good results at the Vets, let us know

I called the vet and they think it may be an alergic reaction or a bite. I was told to keep an eye on his tongue to make sure it doesn't swell because he won't be able to breathe. If the swelling doesn't go down in a couple hours Iam to bring him in, of course if it gets worse to call and get him in straight away.
I hate this.... Thanks for your reply :)
I'll keep you posted.

I had a bitch with a bee sting under the chin.  It swelled like that.  Do you have any antihistamine in the house?  Might be worth considering if it keeps swelling but mention it to your Vet before you give it.

I called the vet back and I was told to give him some benadril if the swelling doesn't go down by 12 noon. She worked out how much to give him and every 8 hrs and told me that drowsiness is one of the side effects so not to get to alarmed if he's really tired.. It does look like it went down some, now its just more a lil bit of his eye and his one side of his muzzle and cheek.  He was chewing on a bone, eating and playing just fine, so he still seems very happy in himself which Iam pleased with.

Thank you for your fast responses, will keep you posted...

Right now he's laying by the heater with his sister.

ttfn :)

Hope things are going OK. Two of mine have had sudden swelling of the face in the past. One was allergic to our pet hamster, and the other had been stung by a bee. In both cases the swelling resolved in a few hours even without treatment.

Best wishes

hi dollface

i have a friend who keeps bees , he tells me the temperature is too low for bees and wasp this time of year they go into a semi hibernation, not coming out the hive, cos they cant fly if its too cold,is there any chance it might be a rodent bite mice love a warm houses in winter and no matter how hard you try you can never keep them out,
it did happen at night and dogs can try to catch mice ?

One of my dogs once had a similar EXTREME reaction to a plastic flea collar - has anything new been introduced into his environment?

I think it was maybe a bug bite, but not sure. I have washed all his bedding in his kennel and this morning his face is almost back to normal, his cheek is still a lil bit swollen. I can't think of anything he may of ate, all he has had was his dogfood and a dog treat which I always give them.

Nice to see his face back, it did scare me. I gave him benadril around noon and again at 11pm and that seemed to work. Had to be an alergy to something, but I now have that on hand just incase. I don't think I should give him any more, don't wanna over do it since he has had it twice and I was told it must be 8hrs apart which I did, but I never asked how long I should give it to him.
Do you think it would hurt if I gave it to him once more today since his cheek is still a lil swollen?
