Topic Dog Boards / General / Cloned pets?!

I read something in DW about an American woman who has had her pet cat cloned  and wondered what people thought about this. Aside from the fact it cost over $26,000(!!), who would want a clone of anything, especially in America where thousands of unwanted pets are PTS every year.
It said the cat had the same personality as her dead one, but I have read that often they don't look the same, maybe someone knows a bit more about this than me!
All of my pets(especially the dogs) are individuals and therefore unreplaceable, what is peoples motivation for cloning a pet?
It will be interesting to hear peoples views on this subject... :)

I think it's a big waste of money. You wouldn't clone your dead child would you?

Hardly the same thing though ...

i wouldnt, however much i love my dogs & cherish my time with them theres something im not comftable with about trying to bring them baCK.
also surely its the animals experinces that make it partially how it is & we could never recreate that.
also it would stop me sharing mylife with other lovely dogs & experincing all their lovely personaltys.

imagine if you went mad a cloned your dog a few times & had a pack of the same animal running about....... ;)

Never been faced with such a terrible loss I guess opinions are based on what we think we may feel.

I personally think that people and animals are the creation not only of our genetics but of our upbringing, life experiences whether good or bad etc etc and you will never ever get the same person, dog or anything for that matter again, because I think like this it would also make me worry that by cloning to replace something what would happen when you discovered that the dog or person however you want to look at it was not nearly the same as the lost one.

Scary really.

I find the whole cloning thing to hard to comprehend, the essence of a person is there soul how can it be cloned? It freaks me out completely.

Just the thought of cloning anythnig gives me the creeps.  I've been happy with the life that my dogs etc. have had and have given me, nothing could ever replace them, not even an identical dog !  Nope definitely not for me.  I've also lost people close to me and although I miss them dreadfully and wish they were here especially at this time of year I definitely wouldn't want them cloning.

Utterly pointless in my opinion, the pleasure of all my dogs has been their individuality and besides the character is formed by upbringing and experience and that can never be replicated.  There is also the issue of health in these cloned animals, Dolly certainly did not enjoy good health although that may be attributed to an unatural (for a sheep :)) indoor lifestyle I believe cloned mice have been found to have shorter lives too.

Personally I feel its down to a owners personal choice whether to do this or not. I dont personally believe we have souls. I can see it becomming common place soon anyway tbh. Yes all animals have different personalities, but having a pet cloned after the origional one has passed, would only give you the same as what you would of had if that pet had lived longer. DO you get my drift there. I know what I want to say, but its hard to put into words :)
