I am thinking about taking my dog on a month long holiday overseas. He will be 1 1/2 years old. He has his pet passport and I have looked into all the necessary requirements. I have found a flight that is non-stop but it is for 10 hours. Is this too long? I thought about taking a stop over but decided that it would be more stressful if he had to get off and then on again. It seems like a long time. I will attach water to the door of his crate but if it got knocked off for some reason he would be without water for a long time. I'm sure the air staff would check on him but I wouldn't want to rely on it. Any ideas?
It would be much kinder to leave him at home. In my opinion, a 10 hour flight, with a couple of hours either side for loading and unloading is too long.
It can be justified for permanent export but is not fair on a dog for a few weeks and then having to face it again on the way back.
Also, you must take into considerstion the health risks that you will be exposing him to, from sand-flies to heartworm and many other nasties inbetween.
Since the Pet Passport scheme was introduced, there has been an alarming increase in potentially life-threatening diseases in pets that have been taken abroad, many of them are susceptible due to no natural immunity because they would not normally be exposed to the risk.
You cannot possibly vaccinate or protect against all possible threats.
Think of your dogs best interest and leave him at home.
