I have a fifteen week old Tibetan Terrier who I have just started to take for a walk , she is so good at staying close and coming when called that I let her off the lead but she seems to get quite stressed at first and jumps up from behind and nips trousers and boots, should I ignore her and keep walking or should I put her back on the lead until she is a bit older? Also when she is off and we meet people she loves it and jumps up at them, at home I am constantly saying down and putting her back on four feet if she does it but I have no chance when we are out. What is the best way of dealing with this problem?

Well done on your new puppy. Firstly I would just try to ignore her behaviour when out on a walk just leave her off and she'll get used to it she is still only a baby. If she does jump up at people then ask them to only greet her when she has all 4 feet on the ground or is sitting.
I find it best to give different commands for what people usually refer to as down as I believe it stops the dogs getting confused. When I teach down it means lie down. To tell them to get down from the furniture I use the command off. So its off people and things and down when you want her to lie down. Stops the dog getting confused and being told off for lying on the sofa!

Yes, I do so agree with your reasoning Bec. The amount of times i have seen confused dogs because o f the inappropriate use of this word .... :)

Thanks for advice. I expect she will grow out of it,and I will try to remember to use the word off if I can.

I taught the Towel Hound that she only gets a fuss when her bottom is on the ground. It's sit and then a good rub of the chest. When anyone came to the house I made her sit before they approached her and now she does it automatically. It's soooooo funny to see her bottom bouncing off the floor in the excitement. :D

When you are out, you will have to be strict at asking people not to make a fuss of her. It's hard, because everyone loves a puppy, but if she learns now that not everyone she meets is going to appreciate two muddy paws on their coat, it will make it easier for both of you when she's older.

Can anyone tell me why it seems to be people wearing white or light clothes that they jump up, do they realy want you to spend a fortune on dry cleaning charges, well you have to offer don't you. JH
