Wd. anybody have an old dog hipscored if the breeders of a new breed were looking at hips?  Just wondering as I'm wanting to spay one of my bitches in the next few months and wondered whether it wd. be worth having her hips done at the same time?  She is old, 11, so do you think it's worth it?  She's very fit and shows no signs of problems but don't want to start anything off.

If she has progeny I would, the little extra time under the GA I wouldn't have thought the risks were any greater than just having her spayed

The x-ray would take no more than 5 minutes and should do no harm at all. The choice is yours but if you want it done then go for it. I can understand with a rare breed how important it is to build up a picture of the hips on the dogs in the country.

Best wishes, John

I agree P, if she were my dog, I would take advantage of her already being under GA.

Yep, agree with the others, while she`s under I`d have them done :)

I agree with the others, would definitely get her done.  The oldest one I had done was 7.5 when she went into to be spayed

Glad that people agree with me :d  Just worried about how the score wd. be affected at this age as it might not be quite a true score.  I may just have her x-rayed and see what I think when I see them but I think I'll go for it !!

Yes thanks for the e-card Terri it was wonderful as always.  Did you get my pathetic effort at doing one on the comp. ?  By the way Lastar's papers were lost by the Spanish KC so I should have them in the next week or so, any signs of my girl yet ?

I had a bitch scored when being spayed at the age of 6yrs about 15 yrs ago. She had one of the lowest scores recorded & is still in around the top 10 lowest scores in the breed.

Yeah but my girls double that age, but I have decided that I'm going to have her done, so fingers crossed.  It will be in about 2 months time as she's just finishing her season at the moment.  I'll keep you all up-to-date on how she goes on.

Basically if her hips were good when young then the core won't be affectd by much even in old age, but if her score would have been poor when young it would be likely to deterirate more when old if that makes sense.

I would send the plates of regardless as most vets can be way out with guessing the likley score.  It will always have the date on any registration for her offspring so anyone looking up her details will know she was aged when she was scored and take that into acdcount when assessing the relevance.

A dog of my own breeding had a score only one point higher (8 in total) than his sister who was sored at a year, he was 6 at the time.

Have just remembered, Emma has been hip scored twice!!!  At a year old she and her litter sister were scored, but the vets had crossed over their reg no's. so they were given each others scores, I only had Emma done again last October at the age of 4.5 years and one hip was only 1 point higher than at a year old.

Edited to say she was 5.5 not 4.5years
