Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Uncontrollable around mother and baby

Hi.

I have a cross staffy bitch age two.  My sister and her new born baby visited yesterday.  The baby was asleep in her car seat for a while and my dog seemed quite excited and did not settle pacing up and down, then came the first feed and change,  At this point my dog seemed to go into a frenzy, she began crying and whinging and generallly became very very anxious and hyperactive. She could only be in the same room on her lead.   When the baby had been fed etc we let the dog have a closer supervised sniff, thinking this may calm her down. It did for a bit but her behaviour persisted the entire evening and for about one hour after they had left.  She seemed to home in on my sister and her breasts ( she is breast feeding).  Once they had gone she spen approx 1 hour searching for them.

has anyone come across this behvaiour before and can anyone give me any advise on how best to proceed to solve this problem.???

Does your sister visit very often?  Will she be visiting lots with her new baby in the future?  I'd suggest you give her some old clean t shirts or towels that she can wear and let you have back unwashed, so your Staffie can have them in her bed to get used to the smells of babys and breastfeeding.

Great idea digger :)

Could it be her maternal instinct kicking in??  I say this because I had a bitch who got very excited if she heard puppies squeaking on the tv - even baby noises would get her rapt attention and she would search behind the tv for them, when my friend brought her new baby to the house (also breast feeding ;) ) she was very very interested and seemed quite excited, tail wagging, wanting to wash the new 'pup' etc.  :D   She made a wonderful dam and was very patient and attentive with her pups.
