Spice is weighed every 2/3 wks., at her weigh-in this week, she has reached a weight of 24kgs? she's a border collie. She has a thick 'winter coat' on at present and her usual steady weight is around 21 1/2 to 22kgs. could the fur weigh that much more through the winter? She is as active as ever and I can feel her ribcage and she seems lean under her coat.
She gets lots of walks and 'free' exercise off lead, plays football and is very energetic, typical border collie
Do your dogs gain much weight from a winter coat, dependent on the breed?
Jacqueline :)

When I was reading the title of this post I was going to say areound 18kg as that is what my freinds bitch weighs, and another frinds rather plump bitch is 20kg, so I suppose it depends on ehr build as yours is m uch heavier than that. I have a double coated breed and there is no difference in theri in and out of coat weight. I keep them at a steady weight all year around.

Thanks for the responses,
Maybe I should add that she is 21.5" in height and was spayed in August. I was concerned that the spay has caused the weight increase? She gets tonnes of exercise and is constantly 'on the go' playing with her toys and charging about. She eats her meal of Nature diet (1 pack daily) and 2-3 small handfuls of JWB and the only other 'treat' she gets is raw carrot, raw bone(occasionally) and a dental chew once or twice a week, which doesn't seem a lot.She never leaves anything in her bowl :D

Jaqueline,
Why are you weighing her every 2-3 weeks, is there a health problem? Even on my vet's scales my dog's weight varies within the same minute - every time they move. If you are weighing her on a home scale (holding her?) then you can expect the same variation.
If you press her sides and with no more than gentle pressure you can feel her ribs, she's fine. She should also have a defined waist. What is says on the scales is irrelevant.
You don't say hold old she is, but if she is now a mature adult her metabolism will naturally have slowed down a little, with or without spaying.
BTW, 2-3 even "small" handfuls of JWB a day is quite a lot of extra food. As a test, pretend you are in a generous mood with her (I bet it happens often!) and put 2-3 of your handfuls into a bowl. Then either weigh it or put it in a measuring cup. I bet you would be surprised at how much extra food you are actually giving her each day.

That is the amountof actual food my 20kg Elkhounds eat as mainteneance (6 to 8oz) :D
My freind finds that her Border Collies are on around 12oz dry food as they are very active compared to some breeds, so her Elkhound and Border Collie are on 6oz and 12 oz and weigh the same.

my nellie is 21-22kg & she is FAT! shes a shortie though. tara who is a largish bitch is perfect at 21 kilo. they are both mature bitches,5 & 7, 18kilos is around average for young dogs under about 2
