Topic Dog Boards / Health / HELP- decision needed today!
- By Trisha Hyde [gb] Date 23.12.04 10:49 UTC
It's me with Scooby (choc lab) again with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Booster time nearing so decided to get blood done to check immunity.  Parvo immunity is excellent, Hepatitis on border line, Distemper is well below!  Because last year it was 2 days after booster that vomit and subsequent IBD was diagnosed now don't know what to do.  Would be tempted not to give it, but I look after lots of other dogs and don't want to put scooby at risk.

Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

Many years ago we had a dog who died from distemper. My mother, who remembers it well (I was too young), says she wouldn't wish that death on any dog.

I would suggest looking at homeopathic remedies - I understand that iif you give at the same time as the booster, as I understand it, you can help "recovery" from the shock of the vaccinations - but please get confirmation of this ..... I can't recall where or when I was told this and I would hate to have my knickers in a twist over this!!

Think I would do a course of the homeopathic nosode, give it time to take (maybe a fortnight, but I don't really know)  then get another titre done, and boost if really still necessary.   However, really needs a homeopathic vet to advise, not me!  I know it's more expense, but it's a cautious option given his history.

I was told once (again, can't remember where or when) that the human measles vaccine give immunity to distemper, but you're unlikely to find a vet who would gamble with that!!!!

Don't forget titre testing is close to useless because its "memory cells" that trigger immune responses and these CANNOT be measured.  So the fact one titre level was low only means that your dog has NOT come into contact with that disease recently and the memory cells have not triggered a response.

Why not do a Google search on IBD - personally I'd stick with homeopathic but other owners' experiences may be better to go by.
