We've used them 3 times on different bitches, but to be honest I would say no they don't work.  My girl has just had a litter, her last premate said retest in 3-6 days, we took her for mating on that same day and she has had 7 pups and this was 6 days before the test said she was ready.  Our other girl had a slipped mating 7 days BEFORE the test said she was ready, she got pregnant too.

So from now on I won't use the premate tests, I'll go on the stud dogs say so :-)

I used the test on my gsd bitch with her first litter. I had a gut feeling that she was ready and went for the test that day(monday) the results came back on the tuesday and said she had ovulated the day she had the test. We took her for a mating on the tuesday night and she was ready, she had another 2 seperate matings on the wednesday then again on the friday. She had 5 puppies. In this case I would say that the test definately did work but this is the only time I have used it and even if it said that she wasnt ready I wouldve tried her with the dog anyway, as I know my own bitch and knew she was ready.
so yes I think your bitch will still be ok as long as you take her soon, depending on whether or not the test is accurate lol

Good luck

Wwhat you have to remeber is there is quite a wide window of opportunity.

A fertile dogs sperm can live in a bitch for a week, though stay in good condition for around 4 days.  A bitch ovulates immature eggs that take two days to mature,a dn are viable for a further two days.

People are often confused with the test results.  If the test is saying ovulation is occuring today then the optimum mating day is in two days, but the bitch would probably still get pregnant if she was mated 3 to 5 days ago, or was mated in four days time, though litter size may well be affected.

Also it depends on whether you are using the quantative lab tests that have a slower turn around, but actually measure the levels of hormone more acuratyely, or the Premate Kits that are not quite as accuarate but are accurate enough for most needs, giving a colour chart to compare the test with.  The level of hormone causes the colour in the sample to change.

My awkward unco-operative bitch seems to be ovulating consistently on day 12.  Have had her tested twice.  The first time I tried mating her the dogs was dead keen on her from day 15 to 17.  The next season we managed to get her mated at the end of day 16 and by day 17 the dog wasn't too fussed, according to the premate we only just caught her as she was going over, which a smaller than avergae litter born at 58 days would seem to confirm.  This time he was very keen on day 15, but we only got a slip mating as she would have none of it.

I've only used this test once. Results said she would be ready about day 11-13, so off she went, nearly 200 miles away (fortunately the stud dog owner is a friend). The stud ignored her completely for 10 days. She was actually mated on day 18 & 21 and went on to produce pups. In future, I'll do what I've always do & believe the dog!

A couple of times I have insisted on this when a bitch has missed on a previous season.  But all too often it seems that the vet tests once and then gives a general opinion of "she should be ready in two days time".  That isn't good enough, it is just a waste of the owner's money.  A proper test shoudl be repeated every few days until a definite result indicating ovulation is achieved.

When a premate is used properly, I am sure it is very helpful.  The problem is that very few vets seem to use it properly.

Hi

I have used pre mate tests for the last few years and wouldnt do it any other way now. If you use the lab tests giving the exact progesterone count these are the most accurate although the colour tests are very good if used correctly and you get the result within a few hours. Once ovulation has occurred, we mate 24-48 hours later.
Matings are not always successful though, but this obviously doesnt mean it is the fault of the test!!

Merry Christmas Everyone :-)
I think the tests are only as good as the vets carrying them out, I think they do probably work if the results are read correctly. I used them for my first breeding experience, 5 tests done in all!! at a cost of £100. I like you was making a long 600 mile round trip. I had them done on days 11,13,15,17 & 19 and was told to go asap (went within 24 hours). My bitch wasn't interested but she was a maiden, the dog was interested. In the end she stopped bleeding within 48 hours of mating (day 22) I have since come to the conclusion that it wasn't because she was pregnant and merely because her season had finished (exactly the same day s the previous season. Unfortunately 3 of my tests were all carried out by different vets (at the same practice).
By what you have said all sounds good and I wish you luck, for me next time I am using a different method, called instinct as initally I had thought my bitch was ready 6-7 days before the test said she was.
Good luck :-)

remember this one??
I took lizzy for her scan at day 29 and they couldnt say for sure, one vet thought she was, another said she wasnt and to bring her back in a week or so.
Went back yesterday on day 37 and there is nothing there, she has missed!! I know a word which fits but cant use it. Ah well rough with the smooth.

Bad luck John - horribly disappointing for you. Had the same last year - we imported a bitch we thought in whelp - she had had two tied matings before she came and we were very hopeful. But she missed too. :(

But she was mated again just before new year (to a dog here this time) and all the signs are that she is in whelp so we are keeping everything crossed that it will work out. She is about half way there.

Hope things work better with Lizzie next time.

Best wishes
Janet
