Hi everyone
I am trying to find out what the average prices are for pedigree puppies. Would anyone know where I might be able to find a general average puppy price list as my husband and I are not sure which breed we want to go for.

Try
Petplanet. It's out of date, but it'll give you a rough idea.

It will depend on the breed and you will probably find that reputable breeders will all charge pretty much the same, give or take.

And a good breeder will charge the same price whatever colour the pup - not higher for special rare colours ;)

Notn necessarily so, Dill. It depends on the breed. Of course, beware of the breeder who charges extra for "rare colours" which are in fact mismarks or incorrect colours. However, in some breeds (my 2 breeds being among them) colour has an effect on price. In pugs Blacks are usually quite a bit more than fawns, and in American Cockers you will often find that Buffs are more than blacks.

And some people will charge extra for 'Show Quality' pups too  Doesn't make it right tho In my humble opinion ;)

Lel,
Is that really true?? That is shocking

I've also been told that some charge more if the one/both of the parents is a champion
In that case why not just charge extra for whichever pup has been chosen "because its special" that way advantage could be taken of every puppy buyer :( :(

Just want to add this is not always the case - but some certainly do

Forgot to add,
Surely every puppy in the litter is special in some way or another, so all the prices should be the same. The only time I would charge a different price for a pup is if it had a slight problem of some sort, eg. tail damage/ ear flap damage (have heard of bitch damaging pup after Oxytocin jab) and the pup would be presented as same price as the rest, only when paying would the difference be mentioned. (that way the pup would be chosen for itself not the price ;) ) I dunno, maybe I'm just wierd......

Seems to depend on breed in some cases. In my breed EVERYONE charges the same...from reknowned breeders who have bred many champions to 'pet' breeders and even puppy supermarkets.
There is no difference in price between dogs and bitches and it doesn't depend on whether the parents are champions or not.
Archer

Beat me to it, as after all no guarantee that pup will make a show dog, worker what hae you. Pups are sold as well bred companions, and everything else is a bonus.
As Archer says all of us within the breed charge the same, and the few puppy retailers who sell puppy farmed ones charge the same, though at one time they were actually charging MORE!!! Of course when these inevitably come into rescue guess who doesn't mnake a contribution towards rescue costs.
Just heard that the bottle of Whiskey ragffled at Crufts raised £115 for Rescue. Not bad for the small band of exhibitors that we have.

Breeders would be very foolish to sell a puppy as "show quality" because if it didn't make the grade the purchaser could ask for their money back. The best puppy in the world (for showing) could be sold to some people & still wouldn't make it!

Agree with you there Anwen, there are so many variables as a pup grows, care, management, growth, etc. I feel it would be arrogant to sell a pup as show quality, all that can be said of a pup of usual sale age is that it is as well bred as was possible and doesn't have any obvious faults, eg unacceptable colour, anything else is just guesswork.

Which goes to show that the norm between breeds can be very different. We only breed Fawn Pugs, but are obviously aware or the general feelings about prices in the breed, and blacks, becasue there are so many less of them, are always at a premium. I guess this is market forces at work, as well as the fact that there are so few black sutd dogs around that the fees are considerably higher. And most breeders i know (in both of my breeds) do charge more for a "show prospect" puppy. However, in our case, this partially reflects the back up we provide, as we usually replace pups who do not make the grade for the ring. The colour thing has never struck me as odd or unfair. There are usually lots more black pups in Yankees around than buffs, and lots of people in the breed do charge £50 or £100 more for a bitch. However, in both my breed there is quite a wide range between the usual upper and lower price for a puppy (in Pugs can be a difference of over £1000). This is another one of those cases where what appears wierd and wrong in one breed is usual in others.

Agree with you Gwen! We also have blacks & fawns (only they are called wheaten) in my breed. Wheaten is the common colour but , in many cases, you can't give the blacks away! Just supply & demand as in everything else!
