I have been searching previous posts but couldn't find anything about dogs sexual tendancies, we got our first male golden retriever about a week and a half ago who is 6 months, and has recently started to 'hump' things which is quite embarrassing. How are you supposed to handle this do you just let him get on with it or what? Couldn't find any info in my doggy book.

If it bothers you, tell him "No" and send him to lie down on his bed.

sounds like mine and I noticed he was doing it before I picked him up as 6 week old puppy! nearly didnt have him for that reason, however now wouldnt change him for the world!
I spotted him a few times with a toy when I took him home, but each time I saw him I gave him a little tap on the backside which made him stop, havent noticed it of late.... I've got my fingers crossed that he doesnt do it again.... naughty boooooy!!
I suppose it does bother me a bit, the funny thing is he seems to stop when you look him in the eye!
is he fixed if not you should do that if he is then well it is probably a stage and do tell him no and spray him with a spray bottle my mom say it keeps dogs from over heating and wanting to do that my chihuahua does it to my big dogs leg and we squirt him and he calms down and is now getting better and he is neutered-

Dogluvrusa4eva, dogs which have been castrated can still mate, and even tie, with bitches! Surgery is no substitute for training. (The fact that your chihuahua still does it despite being neutered proves that! ;) )

Angus the Westie does try to hump Frakenfurter the Dachshund (Blame my partner for the daft name), "Frank" is male BTW. I've assumed it was Angus trying to dominate Frank to prove he was top dog (either that or Angus is Gay!!).
We always put Angus in his place when he does this, and it seems to work. Plus Frank snaps at him!

We have a bitch which humps, not so bad now. She did from a pup (8 wks) to our legs. We used to ignore her. We thought it funny at first. Now she's 44kg (Akita) and not so funny, luckly its very rare now.

ive got a humpy bitch too! i too thought it was funny at first.....big mistake.
she actually tries to rub her "female bits" on your foot.....such a hussy! shes spayed didnt make any differeance!
I don't really know if i want him 'fixed', if there is a need to i will but if not i would rather let him be, don't want him to undergo surgery if not needed. I just wondered if it was wrong to stop him doing this.

No, it's not wrong to stop him. He'll soon learn that it's an unwanted behaviour and most likely pack it in.

My westie was in the back garden when a kitchen salesman was in the house. He asked me how old my dog was I replied 6 months and looked out the window there he was with his stuffed lion on the patio I turned every colour then he burst out laughing saying he also had 2 dogs couldn't look at him though (didn't bother with the kitchen either). I got him castrated for medical reasons and he doesn't show any interest in that now.
