Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Westie keeps getting diarrohea?
- By HAMISH75 [gb] Date 15.12.04 19:17 UTC
Hi All

Not sure if i have posted on the right board but thought it seemed right posting under feeding!!! My westie Hamish suffers from diarrohea a lot, when i got him as a puppy he was on Eukanuba which he stayed on until 1yr, at this stage i changed from puppy to adult kibble but these were a lot bigger in size and he struggled eating them, he then started getting the runs a lot so, i changed him over to Nutro chicken and rice for sensitive stomach's as somebody told me that this was a good food, at first he was fine but lately he seems to be getting the runs a lot again, when he gets this i give him chicken and rice for a few days until he motion firms up again and then reintroduce the kibble back but he seems okay for a few weeks and then back he goes again to softer motion, i find aswell that he passes a bit of blood in the runny motion but as soon as he is on chicken and rice the blood stops and the motion firms up and we are fine again, i did speak to my vet who said that as long as the blood stops when he goes on the chicken and rice, there is nothing to worry about, which i must admit when the mess is runny there is some spots of blood in it but once it firms up there is no trace of blood. Does anybody else have any problems with westie's and diarrohea, i have been told that they have got sensitive stomach's but the food he is on says it is for dogs with sensitive stomach's so i cannot understand why he keeps on getting it. Is there any different food perhaps that i could try him on as perhaps this food just doesn't agree with him but i am not sure what other food to try, i want to give him a good quality food but just don't know what else to try. I am going to put him back onto the chicken and rice for a few days until his stomach settles but am not sure how long i should keep him on this for as i know they cannot be on just chicken and rice for too long.
Any suggestions i would be very grateful for.

Thanks
Helen and Hamish

Hi Helen
I have 2 westies, they are both fed on Arden Grange classic chicken. I never have a problem with sensitive tummies or loose stools, and they both love this food too.

Hi Wendy

Is Arden Grange a dry kibble feed? Where can you purchase this from? Hamish is 18 months old and was okay until he went onto the adult food and since then he seems to have had runny motion on and off for ages. How old are your westies, have they been on this food for very long? Sorry all the questions but i am just trying to find a food that he will settle down on.

Thanks again
Helen

Hi Helen
My 2 are 9rs and 5yrs old. They have been on Arden Grange for 2 yrs or more. I have tried them with the other flavours in Arden Grange, but they seem to like this one best. Yes it is a dry kibble. Now and again I alternate with Royal Canin which they like as well, and changing them over doesn't upset their systems at all. Arden Grange have a website. I think it is www.ardengrange.co.uk. If you E-mail them and ask them for some samples, they are very good and send you generous samples of different flavours, just tell them what breed you have. I buy direct from them and it's post free. As I said mine prefer the Classic chicken best. Hope this helps.

Hamish do eukanuba and nutro have any "common" grain ingredients? Just a guess but he may be allergic to certain grains, such as soy,wheat-gluten etc.
Have you tried Burns or naturediet? Both of these are great for "commercial" foods  ;) Burns uses rice as their grain.
