i have af dog named tony he is a rhodesian ridgeback boxer mix he is very large and when he lays down he breaths fast like huh huh huh and we werent sure what was wrong after he has fallen asleep he stops or slows down and doesnt do this heavy breathing when he is walking or running he is not deaf or blind or anything like that and we are very concerned does anyone have any advice he may be fine but we want to know we have two other dogs to but they are fine.

It would be wrong to speculate over the internet what was wrong with your dog he needs to be seen and examined by a vet and if he was mine it would be sooner rather that later :).

You asked for advise and mine is you should take it seriously, if my dog had these symptoms I would certainly see a vet, without wishing to alarm you as Digger has pointed out it can indicate a mass in the body cavity another cause of raised respiratory rate is heart failure.  But I would emphasise again it is impossible for people to diagnose over the internet but we can advise from our experience when we think you should consult a vet.

I'd also have the dog seen by a vet - breathing rates vary slightly, but it shouldnt' be noticable when the dog is resting.  Large dogs can be prone to cancer of the spleen, and this can encroach on the lung area......

i would also like to say that he breaths about 72 times a minute and he seems fine he sleeps well i just dont know if it is rite

Please take your dog to the vet - if a child were breathing badly we'd go to a doctor straight away, and at least a child can usually communicate what other symptoms they are feeling - your poor dog can't :(

Hopefully it's nothing serious, but surely better to err on the side of caution?

If you have any concerns about your dog's health then the vet is the only person who can examine him and advise. Medical advice over the internet can be very dangerous.

It can't harm to get a vet's opinion and it might be nothing so it would put your mind at rest.

If his respiration is that fast I would be seriously worried about heart failure... Please see your vet now.

you dont have to worry i talk to the person i got him from and they said it was normal with him and his size

In other words you couldnt be bothered to take him to the vets. Sorry if I'm offending anyone but I certainly wouldnt settle on the breeder of a cross breed for health information unless they were qualified??. I would still take the dog to the vet...Just to be certain.

Was the person you got him from a vet who examined him? Or is it just a layman's guess?
