Need some help/advice about border collies. At present we have a golden retriever bitch age 31/2. We have just lost our much loved older dog Jessie. My husband has always wanted a border collie - he doesn't know why - just thinks they are beautiful dogs. We would only want to keep the dog as a pet, not for showing or working. How would the two breeds get on toghether. We know nothing about border collies at all. I would like to buy him a puppy ( bitch). I am at home all day and spend at least 2 hours out walking. Can anybody help?

I have 3 border collies all were well socialised with other dogs so they get on with other dogs brilliantly. Thet arnt a very good 'pet' dog they need to be kept active the 2 hrs a day would be great for them but i would also consider somethink like agility or flyball to help keep them ocupied. I think there a great breed and ideal for me they can be very naughty though so training classes are a must these also help with the socialisation. Mine all round each other up its great fun watching them they are really intelligent and fast learners. Regester with the site and any questions you have just ask. Make sure when you find one you see the parents and where its come from. The temprement of the parents will also determine what the puppy will be like. Mine are farm bred but as a first time border collie owner you might be better going to a breeder.

You shouldn't have a problem. I had working border collies, (pre KC recognition ) and retrievers. I kept both breeds together and never had any problems with either breed.
