Topic Dog Boards / Health / Brucellosis test?
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 10.12.04 22:44 UTC
I've just been asked for a brucellosis test on one of our stud dogs before semen is collected for AI in the States.    The bitch owner says it's common procedure in the States, but I've never done it .

Should I have been doing it all the time?   What's the incidence of brucellosis in dogs over here?

I think that it is a routine thing in the USA I've seen websites with dogs described as being brucellosis clear This link might explain things better

Thanks for the link - I wonder if this is the only recorded case over here?

Cheers, Christine.  I think she is being a bit pedantic, as I really think it's not necessary over here.

I had to have this test done on a puppy I was exporting to australia, and it had to be done a specified length of time before she went.  I was told by my vet at the time, part of a large Group practice that we don't have it here in the UK, though for how much longer with dogs travelling here from countries where it does coccur who knows.  I think it is one of the reasons that many like to use fresh AI on bitches in US feeling it protects both partners from infection.  Taking things a bit far there I think.
