Has anyone heard of this . A friend has had her dog quite ill with heliobacter in the gut where it is apparently not usually found. I have done a google but found a lot of the info heavy going. Just wondered if anyone had any info. Where could dog have got it from, will it recur etc. Vet was quite vague.
thanks in anticipation.

Hi Star, I work in Endoscopy (human Hospital) and I can tell you that Helicobacter is a very common bacteria found in the stomach. People have symtoms of indigestion and windy discomfort. We take a sample of gastric mucosa to test for the presence of Helicobacter, and if positive the patient is prescribed a course of erradication therapy. If left untreated the patient can go on to develop gastric ulcers.

So I'm sure the vet can easily treat the dog with medication. I would also presume that the dog could potentially have picked the infection up from a human with whom he has close contact. Anyone in the dogs house got gastric symptoms?

Hi Dawn
Thanks for the reply. No one else had any symptoms. the other dog in the house was fine. The dogs are exercised in lots of different places so perhaps she could have picked it up while out. The dog was very ill with d and v, she was vomiting 'quote' pieces of stomach lining and passing blood. Not sure what drugs she was given but vet says can only be given max for 6/8 weeks or can cause liver damage. he was unsure whether condition could return.
I have heard of 2 other dogs in our area, one had campylobacter (is this similar) and 2 young deerhounds are being tested at the moment, all living in a 5 mile radius.

Hi Sue, yes campylobacter is extremely similar. In fact the test for Helicobacter is called a CLO test, and CLO stands for campylobacter-like oganism.

Yep my old dog had this in his gut they tested it by sending up a stool sample to the lab and testing it,came back positive, on antibiotics for 2 weeks then every 3 months had to be tested for any re-ocurrance.

Luckily it sorted things out......(use an old yogurt pot very useful, got to be a  standing joke saying here's one we prepared earlier!!)
