Hi John,

Although all members of the HPR sub-group the breeds you ahve mentioned all have their own, specific characteristics so I would suggest that you thorougly research each one before deciding which is siutable for your situation :) Accidental litters happen of course but you are much better off going to a reputable breeder of one the above mentioned. Some breeders will leave a tail on a pup if you pay in full but at 2/3 days it can be hard to tell which are going to be suitable for showing/working homes and some breeders will not take the risk, from what ihve read on a post elsewhere on here :D
Good luck and here are some links you may find helpful

HV Clubs

I've had GSP and a Weimaraner and a GSPxWeimaraner, all boys, the Vizsla's I've met seem quite similar...  (loopy!)

Thanks for the advice - I won't rule out a pure-bred but I just wanted to see if there's a cross out there first....

(It's me - registered on here now)

cheers John

Welcome to Chamdog Jonh, hope you enjoy it here:D!!
I have no personal experience of GSPs, ie never owned one, but we have 2 smooth vizslas(both girls who are being joined by a male wire next year!)who are, as you say, loopy but lovely! Unfortuantley all the weimies I've met have either being very shy and nervy or aloof!
Watch out as there are alot of 'inferior' vizslas being bred, they seem to be becoming quite popular and when you are 'in' a breed you are never sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing to happen!!

Good Luck at LKA, what are your dogs names? Always interested to know about others peoples vizslas and their pedigrees!!

Weimaraners should meet the KC breed standard (as should GSPS and HVs) and you will see by that they should not be nervy, shy or aloof; obviously there are poor examples of them about as there are in the other breeds you mention.

Weimaraners are the "hardest" of the gundog group as they were bred for a particular purpose but they make great companions, and when properly trained make excellent WT dogs, agility, gundogs and lots are used as passive detection dogs because of their great noses.

They are, however, not for the faint hearted, and responsible breeders would not deliberately cross them with anything.

Just as there are inferior HVs there are inferior Weims.  Go to a reputable breeder who belongs to the breed clubs and you should have no problem.

Some are not docked and some will leave tails on.  Of course if you have a longhaired Weimaraner that problem is solved as their tails are not docked! :D
