Topic Dog Boards / General / Irish Names - again !!
- By ClaireyS Date 06.12.04 14:57 UTC
We collect our new puppy this week (Irish Setter) and I just cant think of a suitable name for him :(

I have been back over the old threads of when we got Fagan but none of the names on their really appeal to me   It has been suggested that we call him Oliver to go with Fagan, but that wasnt the reason that Fagan was called that and Oliver will be shortened to Olli which I dont really like.

So thinking caps on Champ doggers :)  it has to be a human name, Irish would be good but im not too fussed if not.  It must be original (ie. NOT Murphy or Paddy) his pedigree name will be snow leopard if that gives anyone any ideas ??

Claire :)

Hmm, how about Fintan- can mean "white fire", therefore would go with his pedigree name with the snow part and the fire bit could refer to his colour?  Or I also like Clooney- can mean "an intriguing rogue"-depends on his personality I suppose! :)

Clancy im not sure about, the OH will probably think it is poofy

I think Fintan might be too similar to Fagan, I like Clooney though :)

How about something after a location in Ireland - such as "Fingal" (as in Cave!) or "Mayo", "Dublin"

I do like "Clooney" and "Finbar" too!

Teri ;)

Thanks for all of your replies, I decided in the end not to go with an Irish name ( ) we have called him Alfie, or "little Alf" as he is affectionately known or "Alfred" when he has piddled on the carpet :D :D :D

He is lovely (when he isnt screaming the house down at unearthly hours) and Fagan (who is 8 months now) is really good with him and lets him roll all over him and pull his ears :D :D  Obviously we have to be careful because if Fagan gets too boisterous he could do some real damage.

Excellent, I'm sure when Alfie grows a bit you'll really have your hands full. My oldest girl was desperate to play with our Gordie pup when we got her, and like you we had to be careful of her not being to over the top. Now that Mads is almost 20 months and the new baby Brianna is almost a year, the 3 of them play and fight and generally drive me mad with all the growling and play fighting that goes on. They seem to know when I am watching something particularly good on TV and make lots of noise then :D

Good luck and best wishes
Alli

The noise they make already is awful, its a noise ive only heard Setters do, they lie there opposite each other mouths wide open and make this awful ARGGG ARGG noise at each other then they nip each others feet  and yes  it is always when something good is on the tv !!
